I very much do enjoy the game now more now. I have always loved hockey and rolled with it as it went, but the awful plodding clutch'n'grab and interference of the 90's was crap. The way it was played also contributed to ending the careers of guys like Lemieux and Lindros earlier.

If you preferred the way it was, that's fine. But I think you are very much in the minority.

minority on the internet maybe or just this site. not everyone who has watched hockey for years is on the internet talking about it. a lot of people have turned it off for good.

and that is why tv ratings are down across the board.

How oblivious are you?

Many people aren’t paying for cable/satellite.

They are simply using streaming.

I remember Messier fought a older enforcer, just can't remember his name, when Messier just entered the league. Kicked the poop out of the guy. No one messed with him after that.
- aminnes

Moose.

Also I hated him while he was playing but Big Bird was one tough SOB.

So instead of using the only sample size you have on the internet, you are just going to say that the facts are wrong because you don’t like it ?

here comes the everybody is streaming it argument, the same one wwe fans make when they try to defend the poop that wwe is putting on tv nowadays. 'ratings are down because people are watching on the internet'. please.

So the fact that 50% less people are using TV to watch shows/sports has nothing to do with the fact there are less views on TV?

How does this make any sense?

Have you ever taken a math class? It’s pretty simple.

I don’t miss it.

It isn’t worth the injuries. That is plain and simple to me.

- Santo_44

I don't like that more star players get run now than they used to, and subsequently more injuries to them. Fighters know they may get injured. And actually there really weren't very many injuries from fighting compared to other things.

I find it hilarious and I’m sure many on here do as well.

You just said you have seen better players than Marner that have never gotten a crack at the NHL.

Who? Enlighten us.

Problem in the clutch and grab era was that there was 50 Marchand's running around at all times. Imagine the career Forsberg would've had without those f'n idiots...

There were tons.

Even deaths like Belak and Boogaard.

It wasn’t good for hockey and there is a reason these players are coming out and trying to sue the NHL for it.

No one was educated about head injuries. They are debilitating.

If I watch game on the CBC internet site it counts in the ratings. It only doesn't count if people are watching from illegal streaming sites. I'm not sure that number is even quantifiable.

and so you are just assuming that about 50% of everybody in north america who used to watch hockey on tv is now streaming it on the internet because that's what you do?

Uhm....50% America isn’t watching TV compared to 8 years ago....

That’s all that needs to be said.

actually i think i said that a day or 2 or 3 ago, not today and i stand by it. mitch marner might be one of the best of canada's 1 percenters' kids to play hockey, but that don't mean much to me when 99% is untapped potential still out there not getting the opportunities he has been bestowed. there are tonnes of players out there that could school mitch marner easy, you must live in a bubble or something.

Man NHL scouts must be horrible.

Why is dubas picking up scraps like Wilson, Aberg, Agostino.

There are tonnes of players out there that could score 94 points in the NHL.

uh no. the game is much more boring so chalking it up to strictly people are streaming it is not the complete and correct answer.

There were hardly any. You are talking about post carer concussion issues, which is a true thing no doubt, but hits have the same impact, and star players have been and still are victim of that. If no one was educated about head injuries then they are wasting their time trying to sue. I don't want anyone injured, but a fighter knew what they were doing. Semenko said the Gretzky was why he got paid what he did and was the reason the league had money, so protecting him was the priority, thats why you almost never saw superstars fight in the 80's and 90's. But the league decided to take control of the vigilante justice and have been changing things ever since. During that process many star players have been run and injured in a way they didn't prior. It's cool people like what the league is doing, I have no control over that, but Wendall is the most beloved Leaf for a reason, he could play and he protected his teammates, now it's the ref, who doesn't seem to be doing a very good job.

possibly a bit shortsighted...

Forsberg was 10x more entertaining to watch than the 'no talents' that (frank)ed it all up.

Much of the freedom stars once had was taken away. Scoring plummeted, so the league increased PPs, which are very boring, and why 5vs5 playoff hockey is still the pinnacle. Obviously goalie gear and other factors are a part of it. But you don't go from 15 50 goal scorers to 3 in 4 years after the instigator without seeing it as a major factor.
