apart from Rielly's contract, none of the NHL contracts on Leafs are 'great' as in trade value. the only other contract of great trade value was Kadri's, and the return was just ok there. - MaximusAurelius Max, can you please stop putting words in my mouth. This is the second time in about 2 pages. I didn't say they were littered with great contracts, I never said Matthews' contract was great. I actually said I wouldn't be over the moon about it if my team signed him to it. I just said it wasn't bad. Same can be said for every other player on the team. You could trade them if need be, which grants the team great flexibility. Most teams cannot say the same.

Rielly - Atomic Wedgie[not current management]
Kadri [not current management]
Johnsson [don't think that's a great deal]
Kapanen [maybe]
Spezza [sure, a great deal]

you're speaking as if Barkov and Couturier are 30+ years.
and both Matthews and Marner should have been signed earlier to keep their caphits lower and contract terms longer. - MaximusAurelius
No, No I'm not. Again, stop putting words in my mouth. This is all economics, Max. The market has shifted and it doesn't take long for that to happen. We're seeing it before our eyes. |

Put them on your curb with a sign that says, "FREE TO A GOOD HOME."
You put them up for $50, you'll get haggled down to $30.
It's just not worth the time when you end up with $60. - Atomic Wedgie
Actually I think family may want them... probably my best bet. |

i wasn't putting words in your mouth.
you were saying no bad contracts (since all tradeable).
my counter point is that none of the contracts are superbargains with great trade value either. |

And I have explained, why that contract is more than meets the eyes on this very message board.
And still we have McAvoy, Marner, Rantanen, Point, Werenski, Provorov unsigned. |

it was very much related to what you were saying.
i wasn't putting any words in your mouth - that's all.

I too wish our players sucked/disappointed and signed long term deals only to prove everybody wrong and become elite and retroactively become a steal! - AdamFrench

sure - still a good deal for SJ.
they'll see what will happen after 4 years - with new CBA, all things might change anyway (and Meier is taking a big risk that RFA rules will change under the new CBA, taking away his 'guaranteed' 10mln salary in year 5). |

Oh come on, teams will line-up for Matthews at 11.6 right now.
Most teams have 3rd or 4th liners that are untradeble. Leafs no longer do,. |

How? I said there weren't any bad contracts on the Leafs. Then you say there aren't any good ones. Awesome, I never said there were. |

really??
you yourself were raving about Barkov and McKinnon before they even entered the NHL. Not a big surprise they developed into topline C's.
same with Couturier - when he signed that bargain contract, he had already proven to be a great #2C with very much upside - a C capable of completely eliminating a top C like Malkin in a playoffs series. |

Marner will sign on Thursday September 19th @ 3:30 pm.
It will be 6 years AAV of 10.416M per season ($62.496M)
There is ZERO chance this extends into the regular season...because it cant |

I wasn't implying you said.
I was merely pointing out that yes, not really any bad contracts on the team - but that there weren't any great deals on there either.. |

thank you Jesus.
coincidently - this is the same day (i think it is 19th, although could be 15th) there is a deadline for NHLPA to indicate whether they want to opt out of the final years of the current CBA. |

The problem is he doesn't shun them. |

great value contracts can be both good and bad. great for the budget.
but there is a human side to it. patches had a great value deal in mtl - but do you think he was happy being underpaid while pk was overpaid? |

Yes, but this is all in the context of this off season and RFAs looking to be paid. You aren't going to see many of these guys take team friendly deals like they used to (the examples you provided). That's my point. |

Unfortunately that same logic is what has kept Toronto from having an NFL team. There is no question whatsoever that the city could and would support it. The problem is not many new fans, and not much new TV revenue. - Aetherial
It would likely kill the CFL too
But I'm bored right now, so I'm gonna throw this out there.. iF Toronto did get an NFL team. What would be a good team name? I'll have to put some thought into it myself.
