Reinhart, Risto and Asplund for Mantha, Athanasiou, and a 2nd

Reinhart is the best player. If you think Risto is horrible then I see why you wouldn't want to do it, but as a Sabres fan, i wouldn't do it either, which tells me it's close

It was a silly trade idea, but I think it's actually closer to fair than most deals on this site.

Reinhart is the best player in the deal, but he needs a new contract. Him and Athanasiou are similar to me. Reinhart would probably be amazing with Larkin instead of having to try to make a couple of third liners better on buffalo's second line.

Risto for Mantha was Ek's idea not mine. Mantha is a second liner, Risto is probably a #3-#4 defensemen. I wouldn't do it but it's not totally insane. depends how you value Risto, I have him really low but a lot of hockey people don't care about advanced stats.

Asplund will be a decent two way checking center, worth more than a second round pick. Maybe upgrade Asplund to Will Borgen if Detroit would rather have a defensive prospect.

The problem with risto is that all of his coaches have looked at how big and mean he is and said "That's a shutdown defenseman!"

Actually he's an offensive defenseman and should be given good ozone starts, but he never has.

Risto has played too many minutes on a bad team so he can't be solely blamed for that. But he has to hold some accountability for that. Risto isn't as bad as his critics say he is. But he's not as good as apologists say he is.

Sabres are better off keeping him for now and hope Freddy Krueger can improve his play. End the Nightmare on Risto Street stigma. Get his value up and then flip him at the trade deadline.

It would have to be for better than Ristolainen. I’m preferable to keeping Mantha because we have so much coming off the books. I think I read 20 contracts are up next year between the NHL and AHL. Gives Yzerman plenty of options to move stuff around, release the dead weight and begin his own version of the club.

I would rather trade AA than Mantha for a defender. But that’s just me.

Mantha does take nights off. His confidence took a hit when his idiot head coach kept using him as a scapegoat in the media for the Red Wings losing each night. Blashill is a know nothing buffoon who shouldn't be coaching in the NHL. He's all about making excuses and throwing his players under the bus to cover his own coward a$$.

But Mantha is still only 25 is big and has one of the best wrist shots in the NHL. I think he'll explode if he's traded out of Detroit. You're right. I'd target Minny especially with new GM Guerin in charge. Spurgeon and Dumba would interest me. Wings would likely have to add but Mantha is a good starting point. Maybe Carolina with their sick defensive depth. But I'm not a fan of Faulk. Slavin is untouchable and I don't know if Hamilton would like Detroit's museums. Maybe Pesce? I'm not sure if he's worth Mantha.
