Kreids isn't worth as much as we think. He will be a UFA after this year looking for his big pay day. I don't think other teams would be willing to give away the farm for him.imo - mdw7413
Look what Nash brought. Kreider could bring in a similar haul at deadline

I tell you right now, I thought Brendl was going to be a superstar, I followed him his whole draft year in Calgary and flipped out that we traded for him.
The reality is, the Rangers should have known Brendl had red flags and didn't do their due diligence - jimbro83
As did I
I was thrilled
I’m just saying that they did not have the hype as these guys
Kakko and Kravtsov will be NHLers.

I think we all did. Difference is, the team was so bad back then that we were grasping at anything. Now the team has direction and these guys are so far above Lundmark and Brendl talent-wise that there is legitimate hope for stardom.
Brendl was a lazy sack of poop that made Poti and Malik look good.

The scouting wasn't near as laser focused as it is today. I still think we had a monkey's paw on the Malhotra pick. He's one of the most interesting busts in NHL history. Guy had a long career and was legit one of the best defensive forwards of the past quarter century. He wasn't worth nearly a top 10 pick, but he definitely was a guy who you could assemble part of a contending team with. I really don't think there is another comparable player like him. Bouwmeester comes close, but I'm not sure anyone really calls him a bust despite probably not living up to expectations.
Brendl still breaks my heart, Jim summed it up perfectly. If he just put 50% effort in, he would have dominated the league, he had that much talent and was just never bothered to put any real effort in. Though I always wonder if we never made the Lindros trade if Mess would have lit that fire under him given enough time.
The really sad thing that no one mentions is that all we really had to do to turn things around is probably keep Savard and possibly Cloutier. Though I'm fully convinced the team in that time would have ruined Savard.

the whole thing has such a trickle down effect because if they dont trade Dan Cloutier, they probably dont draft Dan Blackburn 10th overall in 2001 and maybe not Montoya in 2004....no matter what I still think they draft Lundqvist in 7th round in 2000 though

Man I really wonder what Blackburn would have done without the injury. Dude was dedicated as hell I mean he played with two blockers in the AHL so that he could keep playing. That's the type of player that had what it takes.

If the Brendl trade doesn't happen, we also still have Sundstrom. The Lindros trade might have still happened, but I can only imagine a world where because we don't have Brendl, we have Kim Johnsson getting meaningful minutes. Maybe with a better blue line, one of Kloucek, Purinton, etc isn't thrown the wolves and becomes useful as a depth guy.
Crazy to think about what would have happened. You can probably argue if that desperation didn't get worse every year, we never get Jagr and deprive us of one of the more fun teams in Ranger history.

Edit: ECHL not AHL - MeltingPlastic
Honestly, I think we put him a bad spot the moment we had him face Jagr in his first NHL start. I remember being horrified before that game and was quickly proven right in that fear. In that era there were numerous mediocre teams with no real offensive threats we could have started him against. Why that game on national TV?
He had the talent, I just think we gave him zero support even without the injuries. What's scarier is if Blackburn was for real, do we have Hank as a throw in and he becomes a HOF for another org?

Still don't think Hank isn't with the organization. Remember he was Weekes' backup and got his chance due to an injury. With how we were going through tenders during that time I doubt even Neil Smith would have traded him

Don't forget what a tire fire the goaltending situation was in that time. Hank and Montoya really were our only hopes, no one was blocking either of them, certainly not Kevin flippin Weekes. Maybe Hank gets the backup job, but if Blackburn is a star, the team is probably somewhat closer to contention. Hank would be probably viewed as tradeable, especially if he had just remained in the A and tore it up upping his trade value.
It's funny because the same situation may happen to us in the future. The results on Lindblom so far haven't been great, but if Shesty emerges as the starter I could imagine both Olaf and Georgie will be traded regardless of how well they are doing.

I'm hoping that my feeling that his 50 point season was an outlier is 100% wrong. If Trouba is a 50 pt guy, he is worth every cent of the contract and we ripped off the Peg that much more. Both power play units would already be really solid.

I am calling it now, 45-60 points and he is a force in his own end. Him and Panarin are going to make sweet music on the PP.
Dan Girardi has been spotted at the Tampa bay lightning's training facility. Could be signed back after the Point saga concludes. #GoBolts #NHL - jimbro83
So Girardi on the right side of one d-pair and Shattenkirk the other?
