The no trade in the final year of his contract is terrible. Now you can't get a return unless Matthews agrees on the destination. Give him the C and hope for the best. 5 year window starts now.

Agreed. That NMC in the final year really hurts.

He will be worth a king's ransom at that age. There is no way I see him allowing his next team to be weakened that much before he gets there.

He will have every reason to test free agency and give himself the ultimate bargaining power.

I really think UFA's re-signing is going to be less automatic than it was. If that is true, then maybe the Leafs sign a great player to replace him anyway
