like hockey is the only source for entertainment for people.
you said yourself fans keep on coming to leafs' games.
of course every leafs fan would love to see the team win a few Stanley Cups.
But it's not like a lot of fans would stop following the Leafs when team is doing really bad - I've got proof for my statement with Leafs' track record of last 50 years. - MaximusAurelius
I’d say about 75% of my “leaf fan” friends didn’t watch more than a handful of regular season games before they got good again. Now they watch every single one they can.
Being a good team absolutely will get more people to watch and enjoy it more. That’s a fact.

The weird thing was, it was the greatest game Domi ever played. He was about to be named the first game star. - Atomic Wedgie
I was at a game one time when this guy yelled out "Hey Domi! Your mother's an onion!". Domi went berserk and was shouting back at this guy and wanted to fight him
To this day, I have no idea why that's insulting, but it still cracks me and my brother up all the time. My god was he pissed.

Hmm I guess CTV is unaware that these clips have continued to exist in other parts of Canada. I'd say at least half the pumps in Western Canada still have.
I fell your pain though. I get so ticked off when I happen upon a pump that doesn't have. Then I make it a point never to go to that god awful station again. - viper488

There have been some good comments that allude to the way the Leaf fanbase is. I think many of them can be attributed to Shanahan. This is a massive paraphrase, here, but in my recollection he has talked about the passion of the base, but he also talked about it as a habit, and how lockouts can make people change habits, and when you're a team like Toronto who wasn't good, it's an easy habit to break.
He also went on to talk about how there were fewer younger fans because the team had been so bad.
When put all of that together, it reinforces exactly what everyone knows. There used to be familial traditions, and you'd sit down and watch things as a family, and it just was what it was. It bred the passion.
I mean, when I was a kid, there was hockey only on Saturdays, and it wasn't always the Leafs. Then we got regional broadcasting and got Leaf games on Saturday. Then there were 2 games / week on some good weeks (but the Leafs were awful; you could see Kordic get kicked out of a game twice in one week!).
Now you can get all the games from all the teams. Why would someone willfully watch a sad sack team when there is good hockey out there?
Being a bad team for a prolonged period in this day and age is a recipe for disaster not something that anyone is going to celebrate.

Brian Burke was a franking disaster in Toronto. - Atomic Wedgie
I endorse this evaluation.
holy crap... Burke just kept doubling down after every poor decision.. he would make another.
he acquires Phaneuf for relatively low cost.. which was a good thing - then immediately saddles the guy with the Captaincy (he wasn't the right guy) and the stupid boat anchor contract.
and most of all - ignoring his FreeAgent insanity... Ron Wilson... I used to vomit in my mouth every time we got an on screen "let's go"...
but the upside of it all... sure Burke crated the team... but it lead to relatively high first round pics in what 4-5 years.
