So here's a link to the actual transcript of the post-signing presser:

https://mapleleafshotstov...ibility-as-we-move-ahead/

Dubas says that the Matthews camp wanted 8 years:

How does a five-year deal allow you to be more flexible than an eight-year deal?

Dubas: I just think the nature of way deals are in hockey, the younger players, if you want the longer-term, you are also taking up more of their prime, so the AAV rises. Certainly, that

- Atomic Wedgie[eight years] was the intention from the beginning on Auston’s side. They were focused on that.
Just as we kind of worked through it together, having more discussions, we are trying to balance keeping this together while also contending and not having to delete parts from it. We are very thankful that they were willing to move from their desired term. Everyone wants to be here for as long as possible, but we were able to find an AAV that works for everybody. We were able to lock him in and also to maintain some flexibility as we move ahead. That’s how it sort of all came to be.

Matthews dodges the issue:

McDavid and Eichel signed for eight years. How did you arrive at five?

Matthews: A lot of guys have done five years before. I think we understand the cap restraints that we have and that the league and every single team has. We kind of went through everything from three to eight and settled on five. I think both sides are obviously happy and happy to get this over with and move on. For myself, I am proud, and for my family, extremely excited.

About time someone did the work.

According to Bob Mackenzie's speculation, it was the ballpark for an 8 year deal. The word was that Matthews' was down for an 8 year deal, but worked to come up with a lower dollar figure over a shorter term to "help".
- Monkeypunk

So according to Burke, Matthews wants out after 5, according to Bobby Mac he was down for 8. Surprise surprise.

Ya, I think the bottom line is that he was able to successfully argue/negotiate that he was closer to Malkin then he was to Stamkos.

Were any of the elite young 6 yr guys in that class of player? I wouldn't count Monohan, Eberle, Gaudreau in that class. I think they were a step or two down.

Note: - Tavares got (frank)ed.

- The Law

Would you put Barkov in that class? I would. Maybe it's because of the market he plays in but he does not get the same hype.

And maybe Tavares' deal was a blessing for Toronto. Even though he could have gotten more elsewhere $11 mln was already a huge raise from the peanuts he was making in LI

He is really fat, but with only 2 years left, there would be takers for sure, Florida, Colorado would have been interested IMO.

"Down for 8" doesn't exactly describe what kind of money he wanted for an 8 year deal. If he said he wanted a higher AAV than McDavid for 8 years, that's not really helpful or reasonable.

Maybe a 3 year deal was best to keep the cap hit even lower and to guarantee he can't just walk as a UFA.

Burke was also talking about Matthews' maximizing his dollar amount. A max 8 year deal or walking as a UFA in 5 years both accomplish that same goal.

This is the society that we live in now.

1. Make outrageous and unfounded claim
2. Place burden of proof on person you're debating and tell them to "do some digging"
3. ????
4. MAGA

- TheMussel

But his claim was not outrageous. He said he heard this after AM signed.
Others said they hadn’t heard this and assumed he was wrong as a result.

Maybe he wants out now cause the leafs only want him for 5 years.

He feels rejected.

Oh he's still a monster.

I guess the Jets figured they'd have a better chance at winning in the next two years with Buff instead of Trouba.

A mistake imo.

Or maybe Arizona Coyotes leave for Markham so that Matthews doesn't have to move.

Why move Buff? He's locked in and couldn't leave. Trouba said for years that the second he could, he would (frank) off to the States...and he did. Nothing they could do.

That's not necessarily true.

Because if option A is: get more money than McDavid on an 8 year deal, then option B might be: become a UFA ASAP so somebody else will give me what I want.

When Tavares signed his deal with the Islanders, he probably didn't plan to come to Toronto. But when it became an option, he took it. Same could happen with Matthews.

Well they could have traded him for a better package.

But your point stands. Trouba was bound to leave asap.

Maybe. I kind of wonder if he had a list of teams like Parise and Suter did in their UFA years.

I must confess, I still enjoy SimCity.

But I hate the war part not because it’s war...but because I hate repairing my city.
Fackers.
