Apparently anybody could make room, but at what cost.
The whole idea is foolish. - bobbyisno1
Well, only certain teams marner would sign with.
I can't see him signing with a non playoff team. |

I don't even see what Marner is waiting for. The Leafs only have a certain amount of money they can give him, waiting ain't gonna fix it. - daeth
Couldbe structure of the contract, term, bonuses.
Many variables that we wouldnt know about |

I can honestly say I never thought I would have ever seen a great player, that says he wants to be a Leaf for life, not willing to sign a contract that will pay him around $108MM in Salary and endorsements RIGHT AFTER HIS ELC.

I'll bet it's Dubas.
They have just under 10.5 and I think he would prefer to have at least a mill of that left for the trade deadline.
Send down a 750 thou player and 1.75 turns into about a 4 mill player. |

It's the most...wonderful time...of the year.
Kids are back in school.
College football is back.
NFL starts Thursday.
NHL training camps just around the corner.
Wedgie is in his happy place. |

I think that the agent 100% thought that they would be offered a few offer-sheets upwards of $11M+. And now that that obviously didn't/wasn't gonna happen, they're just trying to save face a bit.
So they're gonna wait until the 11th hour and sign what the Leafs are offering. |

Can't know either way obviously but the Leafs didn't cheap out on Nylander or Matthews which is why my assumption is it's an issue on the player/agent side. |

No problem, I'll fix that.
Wake me up, before you go-go,
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo,
Wake me up, before you go-go,
Take me dancing tonight.
You're welcome. |

The whole Ceci thing kinda seems like an error at this point lol. Without him things would be less complicated and he's basically a replacement level player by all indication. |

I hate Doogie Dubas as much as the next guy, but let's be fair here:
- the Nylander contract is not an overpayment.
- Dubas had to pay Matthews want Matthews wanted, because he's Auston frikkin' Matthews, and that deal had to get done prior to July 1st. |

Would enjoy that just to see all the agents/teams that are waiting on the Marner contract before singing their RFA deals to scramble at the last minute. |

Yeah but who else would have taken Zaitsev?
Contracts are a wash this year, free and clear next year.
I think that was a decent trade. |

The Nylander contract is fair. I'd say it's right up to the max of what I would consider a fair deal though. Matthews contract is (frank)ing trash due to length. Cap hit is fine, could even have been higher and it would've been fine as long as the term was longer.
All just my opinion obviously. |

Simple answer: no. Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer.
More complicated answer: Leafs didn't have to offer him $4.5 million contract - could have waited it out to see if Ceci took them to arbitration. If they had gone to arbitration and the ruling came back at higher than $4.5 million, then the Leafs could have walked away.
Weird little idea that I read somewhere on the interwebs: if Ceci had gone to arbitration, the Leafs could have put in $5 million as their offer. The arbitrator would obviously not go below what the Leafs were offering, so then the Leafs could have automatically walked away. |
