if he does prove himself, it also puts VAN in a good position to deal him. 900k is an EASY contract for another team to handle. |

Imagine the hate if I hated Benning........
#bartmanlevelhate - chompsey
Nobody truly hates Benning. Fans just hate managerial incompetence. Canuck fans have experienced it more than their fair share.
Even the slightest hint of it and some fans pounce. Understandable. |

What does prove himself mean? 40 pts? 50 pts? 60 pts? And if he does, then why would the Canucks move such an asset that makes them better? |

Green doesn't equate points to success. Its evident in how he has handled him. I think Green wants Goldy to round out his game, same with Benning. Play defensive, play 3 zones, be a factor all over the ice and not just one zone. |

lol. Thought the same thing after reading Codes’ post. Hang onto him while he’s poop and then trade him when he finally finds his game.
Ok. |

To my point, why would they trade an asset that makes them better? |

my point wasn't the classic "pump and dump". What I want, and what management does have always been two different things. Again, I have always been one of the bigger goldy advocates, and if I had it my way, He would start with Petey and Boeser, and Miller would be our 3C. My point was, if management does involve him in a trade (out of my control), dealing him at that cap hit would be more enticing to a team, than if he had a 2 million + cap hit. |

It’s hard to find a player with a complete package of skills. I always thought the defensive aspect of the game was more difficult to learn at the NHL level than scoring. |

i wouldn't disagree with that, but having said that, you have to be pretty prolific in the offensive zone to get away with being relatively ineffective in the other 2. Again, I still stand by what I said earlier when I think Goldy is the 2nd best creative puck handler on the team. I am really hoping he has every opportunity to play in the top 6. He definitely needs to work on his neutral and defensive zone play though. |

I think it's the other way around. You can't teach a guy like Sutter or Beagle to be a great playmaker or goal scorer, they just don't have the natural instincts or ability. You can, however, teach a guy like Goldy to play defense.
For years people harped on Ovechkin for his defensive laziness and now he's a fierce backchecker. |

Sure, I get that but you prefaced it with "if he proves himself". My point is, what does that mean in reality and if he does then I wouldnt trade him. Bottom line. |

As much as a goldy advocate as I am, I think it's somewhat obvious that goldy has always struggled away from the puck.. while I disagree with green scratching goldy after what I thought was a decent game played, he still doesnt play a strong two way game and hasnt consistently in a canuck uniform. Just my opinion though. |

Its a good discussion because I think you can justify both positions equally.
IMO, true defensive skill depends on personality. Tenacity on the forecheck and backcheck, taking the body, sacrificing your own, etc. is not easily taught. You got to have a dogged mentality to be successful at the NHL level if you don't have natural scoring ability.
I don't think you're teaching a guy like Goldy to play defensively. You're actually teaching him Positioning because he doesn't naturally think defensively. Probably never will. So a coach teaches him the Xs and Os in hopes that Goldy is in a position to react in the best way he can.
