That's my line of thinking as well. Also, I'm not certain that Marner is $1M better than Aho.
- PatC80

Maybe not, but I don't think Aho's contract really gets to qualify as a comparable since he was obviously more concerned with term and getting it done quickly than he was with the actual dollar figure attached.

He took less money than the other guys are going to get in order to force the Canes into finishing negotiations quickly.

He didn't want negotiations to drag on, and the Canes made it clear they weren't going to offer a 5 year term, so they signed an offer sheet with Montreal they were pretty sure would get matched.

Like, what's worst case scenario for Aho in that situation? He ends up in Montreal? Oh no, how terrible.

I hope Mitchy's camp realizes this is a totally different situation than Nylander last year.

Nylander sitting to start the season helped the cap situation.

With every game Mitchy sits this year, it reduces the amount they can give him.

That's a nice little bit of leverage that Dubas has.

- Atomic Wedgie

oh im sure they know all about that.
as mentioned in the Dubas/Bob mac interview yesterday, its the opposite to Willie.

So sign the deal Mitch

eichel and mcdavid play in buffalo and edmonton. those teams need to overpay their players to stay.

so that makes timo meier the best comparable.

am i doing it right?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

The best comparable contracts for Marner haven't been signed yet, which is the problem across the board.

They should all be in that $9-9.5 range, IMO.

yes. it makes no sense to use a bunch of subjective arguments to say a contract is not comparable.

Context is important.

An offer sheet signed for below market value doesn't seem like a fair comparable.

$8.5M/year isn't some lowball outlier.

it was the definition of a market value deal.

Guess they're betting on him to keep improving while also considering how the cap rising will help make this deal look better down the line.

It's not horrible.

Yeah, even if he tops out as like a 25 goal guy it'll look fine in a couple years, but sheesh it seems high right now.
