I look at it the opposite way. Larry/Gus/X is their top defensive line. It's on the others to take time away from them. I see ERod as their #3 offensive option and #2 defensive. Curious to see how Ralph does it. There's so many defensive liabilities on the team to work around. - Lunaion
Solid post.
Well, hopefully they have increased the competition for spots on the team...now, Freddie-Ralphie-boy needs to have the players increase their individual compete level...
Jack plays a big part if that this year in my mind as well..he needs to lead by example in all phases of the game. |

What I have to laugh at is the fact that you wanna use zone starts to defend Risto but for some reason don’t want to include that Larry/Girgs had 80% + D zone starts
They were absolutely fine in the role they played, a heavy defensive one - OneKaneOneCup
This is a good, solid post as well.
Sure, I wish the other three lines could actually play defense responsibly, and better learn to do so quickly...but how they were used, it isn't their fault...infact, their propensity to flip the ice was outstanding. Too bad six other guys could effectively take advantage |

For a 4th liner it is.
People female dog about Larry and Gus at $1.75m
Before you say it, ya he might play 3rd line...but like many Sabres they are playing a line higher than they should. |

Average speed? Sir, that insult will not stand. That is a highly treasonous accusation that cannot be tolerated in a civil society
Don't be mad at erod because the living legend doesn't have a roster spot.
Also, how many fights did erod have last year? How many for pominville? - jcragcrumple
What's this have to do with pommer and the 7 more goals he scored last season than erod?
Fights?
How about be tough enough to stick up for yourself?
Erod lacks that. As well as goal scoring.
2 things we need.
1. Scoring out of our bottom 6
2. Be "self tough"
Meaning not needing help in a physical situation.
Larry and girgs fit that bill (#2) anyways
Nhl has rid the goons, but hockey is a rough sport and needing protection isnt a plus for erod.
Goal scorers earn that right. |

That is fair market value for what players are getting paid this summer
It’s like okposos terrible contract. 4 other players signed essentially the same deal.
Just wait till we play sam 9 to 10 million per year. |

I think the Sabres get lucky if Sam accepts that. The price of players keeps going up.
Eichel at 10 in a couple years might look like a cheap deal |

Keller getting just north of 7 helps. Will depend on some of these other guys, but teams are seemingly playing a bit of hard ball.
Eichel's 10 will be cheap for his production by the end surely. It's getting close now. If we had to sign him today he'd get 12 I'd wager. |

He's definitely faster than Dahlin
Not as good of a skater technically, nor does he have the moves, but he is faster.
Supposedly dahlin spent the summer working on his speed though, so we'll see if he improved - jcragcrumple
EROD is faster than Dahlin... racist. |

Eichel at 10 already does. I’d rather have Eichel at 10 then Mathews at $11.5. |

I'd go a bit differently, although I don't dispute the need for individual players to have the courage to push back in the physicality department.
1- distributed scoring through the Top 9 and 1st & 2nd pairings.
2 - sound defensive play in their own end, along with an efficient transition game. |

Oh, it's not the only one but it's one. BTW Who played with better talent is another, was the anchor of the D and scored multi-point games with crap around him. But carry on with the rationalizations. We can both do this. |

What is funny is trying to justify a player who's main job description is defensively-based, according to their offensive production, when many of said points are generated while the other team is aplaying in their own zone while being a man short. In the meantime, said player records league low +/- rating at -40+ and earns the Green Jacket award...all the while, 2 teammates who have 75%+ defensive zone starts click in with an average -10 on the +/- scale.
The faster they trade him, the better for this team. |

Not sure I follow this logic...
-BTW Who played with better talent is another.
Wouldn't that help his cause, especially in the +/- department. But when he puts up double the "-" while playing with better players like Eichel, Skinner, Reinhart
- was the anchor of the D
The team he anchored was league leading putrid on defense. Thus argument hardly helps his cause
-scored multi-point games with crap around him.
Yup, he is great, EVERONE else sucks and caused those lunk-headed plays game after game...but we watched replay after replay of him losing his man, thriwi g blind passes up the boards, fliping the puck over everyone's head to result only in an icing call.
Trade him now, addition by subtraction.
He scores 43 but remains a minus 40...that is a gross 83 goals against to net down to -40.
Shaking my head. |
