Its a good discussion because I think you can justify both positions equally.

IMO, true defensive skill depends on personality. Tenacity on the forecheck and backcheck, taking the body, sacrificing your own, etc. is not easily taught. You got to have a dogged mentality to be successful at the NHL level if you don't have natural scoring ability.

I don't think you're teaching a guy like Goldy to play defensively. You're actually teaching him Positioning because he doesn't naturally think defensively. Probably never will. So a coach teaches him the Xs and Os in hopes that Goldy is in a position to react in the best way he can.

Fair enough, there's unique skills for every skillset that can't be taught. My opinion is just that some sort of natural talent is required to be an offensive player at the NHL level, versus hard work and grinding that can result in becoming a 3rd or 4th line player. There's some stuff that you just can't learn past a certain age imo

Injuries happen. That said this year there seems to be more depth get you though them.

$900K on a one year deal seems like an odd amount to sign for after having had an entire summer to negotiate a new contract. What was Goldobin's qualifying offer?

Makes me wonder if they were hesitant to sign him at all and have now decided to since Boeser contract talks haven't progressed. They now have a temp replacement in case Brock isn't signed in time for the start of the year.

My other conspiracy theory is that they now consider Baertschi to be too much of a liability and want to replace him with Goldy.

Either way I don't see how to fit all our forwards into a 12 man roster, there's going to need to be a trade or 2 coming soon.

As long as a good chunk of them are Tanev’s PK mins. Tanev in a large 5v5 role with Hughes (& Pettersson’s line) keeps him out of the 🚑 while allowing Hughes to go bonkers. That’s Tanev’s best use at this stage IMO - strictly 5v5 as Hughes conscience. & get JV on the PK ffs.

Benning said today he is very confident Brock will be signed before camp. He also said he has heard from multiple people Goldy has put in a lot of work this summer . I see if as a prove it signing , nothing more to me.

I think their will be a lot of battles at camp and Goldy will be one of them.
