Gards I would've kept as a 4/5 option on a cheap contract but that was never going to happen. He's a leftie too, so where was he going to play in the top 4? I watched Hainsey for 2 years play on the wrong side and while he was adequate, man did that look awkward some times along the boards, receiving passes on your wrong side, etc.

I think it’s good to move on from players sometimes rather than trying to find a fit for them. I love Naz too, but I think it helps guys grow a little more now that he’s gone, and Marleau to some extent. Matthews should be named captain immediately. I don’t buy this “captains aren’t important” crap.

Ive heard the same, but if they don’t have a deal done in 3 days (totally arbitrary) then I don’t get it. If they signed him with the understanding that the team’s defense is the same as yesterday + Gardiner then I really have no idea why they did what they did.
