Vinny was like 35 right? Hayes is 27

Any deal can go south. Not sure why you want this one to so badly. Would you rather tell everyone you were right that it was a bad signing versus him succeeding and helping the team? Cause it honestly feels that way

Here is how I see it. It's all speculation but I don't believe that the situation, barring any unforeseen injury or physical issues that Hayes will become an ineffective player overall over the life of the contract. What is a possibility is that Hayes could become an over paid role player. Even if his offensive production falters, he should still remain an effective forechecker and defensive forward. The hope is that both Patrick and Frost develop and push Hayes down the lineup. However there are no guarantees of that, of course.

JVR already proved signing a big contract for a 2nd or 3rd liner can work and benefit a team

JVR is still in the beginning of the contract.

Right, but he immediately proved to be a good signing over the year despite missing a chunk of time. Plus, with JVR's style of playing and having sweet hands as a net presence, I think its fair to say his production won't fall off a cliff over the years when compared to say a guy like Vinny. If/when you compare JVR to age (age, position, role); Hayes is younger, contributes in more ways (PK, defensively more responsible) and plays the more important position, and fills a very-clear and specific team need. A little silly for anyone to call a big contract a bad signing for future implications when this literally could apply to any player who sings a 5 + year deal. When comparing Hayes to other recent long-term vet signings, I view it as more favorable given he's still in his prime years.

Yes, I think most reasonable fans also have the same view of the situation. There's a small chance he becomes a star and is scoring 70 plus points. There's a small chance he busts completely. Likely he puts up around 60 points for a few years, then is around 45 while helping on the PK. Hopefully by then the cap will have grown to the point where he wont be a burden

We don't know what the situation will be with JVR 5 years from now. The Flyers have some really good young forward prospects. It's possible that they surpass JVR and push him down the lineup. Personally, even though it would temporarily weaken the team, I wish they hadn't signed JVR.

Agreed on both posts and I’ll add, that the cap should go up with the TV deal and expansion. The 7 million today won’t be the same 7 mil 5 years from now

We should also be losing a player with expansion, never know how that changes roles/depth chart.

Also comparing him to Zacha is insane. They're not comparables in the slightest.

by the time Hayes's contract is up, in his last year, he will be 33. this contract basically runs through the rest of his prime, meaning he could get better. With the right linemates and additional PP usage, he can easily set career highs during his Flyers tenure. I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that he is still a productive player in the back end of the deal. its not like he was 32 or even 30 when he signed this deal.

what does Gs next contract look like? Looking at the Caps they have Backstrom next year and Ovie the following. Do they take team friendly deals? Obviously not too cheap but maybe $6-7M range or are these guys cashing in?

I know its a whole other offseason away, but what route do you think the fly guys take? 7-3-1 or 8-1.

I think it's way too soon to call, what if Meyers emerges as a stud throughout the year? or Lindblom or Patrick? Who are the locks? Coots, G, Hayes, Provy, Sanheim, TK, Patrick? Oscar? Ghost?

Its really 2 years away, the Seattle team doesnt start playing until Oct 2021, so draft is what June 2021... lot of time to figure things out

I know, i said a whole other offseason, so we have the summer of 2020 before we get to the summer of 2021. ill word it better in the future, just meant we have one full offseason before the offseason in which the expansion draft is

No problem, it just seems like it is taking forever to get this new team up and running., and is still awhile away

Vinny was a borderline Hall of famer most of his career. He signed for less than what he could have got.

JvR has 60 point plus seasons in his career and I think it’s obvious who the bigger name is of the two. We had JvR locked up already and we sign Hayes to more than JvR.

Look no further than YouTube at Kevin Hayes reactions to his signing. You can’t defend it. Good player, too much money.
