Three years ago. He was 38 last year. And no, he didnt get the most ice time on the pens. He got significant minutes sure....but he was a career minus player leading up to that....im sure having two elite centers and hot goalie might have helped him in Pittsburgh the same way schultz suddenly wasn't a liability. And hainsey had some of his statistically best seasons here, because this leaf team is pretty damn good. - mykokes
He was second only to Dumu-whats his name. He played huge important minutes for the pens to the point people were shocked. Schultz has nothing to do with it other than being another guy Edmonton disgarded much like dooby and others. But hey, the Leafs are so good Ceci will flourish and be able to do the same. |

Pretty sure Hainsey was playing those minutes in part because Letang was out for most of the playoffs. It wasn't the teams' actual plan for those guys to be playing so much, it was bad luck. Luckily the team as a whole was good enough they still won. They didn't win because Ron (frank)ing Hainsey was just that amazing. |

Yes, as I said, he stepped up due to injury.

Which was not the argument. I said Ceci won't be close to Hainsey defensively. Man you guys love to twist poop. |

You are pointing out that Hainsey played big minutes when they won the cup, as if that proves he's a great player. I'm suggesting that him playing those minutes isn't the reason they won, therefore, him playing them on that winning team isn't an indication that he's all that great, or ever was. |

Sure, you joined a debate and made it into your own debate. Totally cool.
So is he better then Ceci defensively? |

Now who's trying to twist words?
I haven't seen Ceci play much, so I can't be certain. Maybe he'll be a little worse, but I doubt by that big a margin. Hainsey slowed down the last couple years. And Hainsey was never that great a player to begin with. When we got Hainsey I remember a lot of Pens fans saying they expected Hunwick would be just as good as Hainsey. They didn't have that high an opinion of him.
If he's that bad though, I doubt Babs is going to keep him by Reilly. He's not an idiot. If Ceci is constantly getting pwned, Babs will adjust and put someone else there. |

Which brings us to the overall point. as bad as the Leafs defence was last year, it has actually gotten worse in terms of own zone play. The one major thing that needs to be addressed was unfortunately not. |

The question most Leafs fans can't seem to answer is who is going to kill penalties? And who is going to kill them effectively and consistently, especially when it matters most.
The Leafs absolutely sucked on the PK in the playoffs. And their season PK wasn't that good either.
Rielly, Barrie, Muzzin, Ceci and then two rookies and/or journeyman and/or AHL defense until Dermott gets back.
And it's adorable watching some people trying to defend Ceci. I'd love to see what these same people would have said if somebody had said "the Leafs should acquire Ceci in a trade" before he was traded here. |

Ceci and Harpur I guess. Gravel killed penalties. Both Ed an Ott finished below the Leafs last season in PK%. Ceci leading the way in overall minutes on the Leafs per last year. The Leafs obviously see him continuing or who will kill penalties?
Also Brown killed and he's gone. With Hyman out for a month, no Marner, the only forward currently on the roster with any real time on the PK is Kapanen. No centres. Very bizarre situation, and they have less than a month to get it al figured out.

It's cool. I hear that Babcock has come up with a groundbreaking strategy. The strategy is to not take any penalties. 0. Nadda. I have a good feeling about it. |

Hopefully it goes better than his avoid-engagement draw penalties strategy from last year. |

Not trying to shame you at all for this.
But I was recently in Europe and I learned how rude it is to ask about careers/school to people when meeting people.
Like legit, it’s something you don’t talk about with people unless they are very close to you.
Just wanted to share that lol, I just found it interesting how the US/Canada is one of the few countries where it’s acceptable and encourages to do what you did. - Santo_44
It is perfectly ok to ask people in europe about their occupations. In the rare case they don't want to tell you, they'll just give you a vague answer.
Europeans might put less emphasis on work and not bring it up first - but only because they feel there are other things more interesting to discuss.
Out of curiosity - what part(s) of Europe did you visit? |

Hainsey is quite a bit better than Ceci - even if on the end of his career.
Hainsey was (except on PK which was really bad for the whole team) playing an almost perfect playoff series vs Boston - he was really solid defensively. (Btw zaitsev was gokd in playoffs as well).
Will be interesting to see indeed what will happen on PK - expect Shore (he'll make the team bc of his pk abilities - at least during absence of Hyman), Kapanen, Mikheyev and potentially Tavares (played some pk on isles). Marner and Hyman after joining the team.
The pp will be interesting - both marner and barrie want to run the pp, and will be difficult to have them on the same unit.
I think leafs will go with 2 competing pp's to start the season:
Pp-1: matthews - mikheyev - marner - rielly - nylander
Pp-2: johnsson - tavares - spezza - kerfoot - barrie
Can't wait for the season to start.. |
