Not to beat a dead horse, but look at Meier's contract. They have to qualify him and the salary in his last year is 10M so he'll be getting a one year deal that pays him north of that, which also walks him to UFA. It seems to be how teams are keeping these guys' cap hit down for a few years and will pay the piper later.

You can look up the minimum qualifying offer on Cap Friendly, for Meier it will be $6.7 Million. Everyone thought this deal was super team friendly but he can take the qualifying offer or try to squeeze a little more out of arbitration and walk as a UFA at age 26. Deal looks good for him now.

I was under the impression the qualifying offer is based off the last year's salary and not a cap number? I think it's higher than 6.7, but I very well could be wrong. I don't have the best grasp on this CBA/contract stuff.

Yup, Carolina is a good fit for him. Guys in my non-contact old timers league are more physical than he is.

Rick, you guys have 2 players to sign and 7.2ish to the cap. How are you guys going to do that?

How long before they trade Getzlaf for peanuts?

That's a fair trade:

What do I look like Don Sweeney?

We have some contracts we could trade, idk if signing them would open up a buyout window, but that's a possibility. For the start of the season we have some people on LTIR so that helps - it's not dire that's for sure.

I’ve never understood the love of MTL smoked meat, it’s pretty good. I love a good corned beef on rye, or a Reuben, tho.

I think you've been fake news fake newsed. My guess is that the logic in cap friendly may not be quite accurate with this particular nuance.

Stipulation for a Qualifying Offer (from the CBA 10.2 (a)):

"if the Player's prior year's Paragraph 1 NHL Salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000 for that League year, 100% of the prior year's Paragraph 1 NHL Salary. *"

* from 50.2: "Paragraph 1 NHL Salary, which shall only be the fixed amount of money payable on account of a particular League Year or a portion of a particular League Year;
