So, the answer is 'maybe'?

I dunno. I'm no lawyer, but the CBA states that a Qualifying Offer is based on a player's salary, not their AAV. Even if you take the wording that CapFriendly poses:

"100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000." which is a paraphrased version of the CBA, and then notice that in year 4 of Meier's contract, it's all $10m in Base Salary.

This makes perfect sense to me.

but in Meier's case, after the deal is up, he's a UFA, no?

After the 4th year, won't he be a UFA?

I think he took less $$, so he could walk into free-agency.

I don't think so. I think he's still an RFA.

Then again, I also know nothing.

Now, I'm not sure...

... A player may only declare himself to be an unrestricted free agent if he is over the age of 27 or has played in the league for a minimum of 7 years.

What the hell is a referee doing in here?

I'm assuming to put up some "Wanted" posters of Scabeh.

He's wanted dead, not alive.

He's still an RFA. I believe the reason he took that contract was because the qualifying offer will be 10M+ due to his salary in the final year. I read an article about this. Let me see if I can track it down.

I’ve never understood the love of MTL smoked meat, it’s pretty good. I love a good corned beef on rye, or a Reuben, tho.

Can confirm.

Somebody yesterday suggested the Leafs franked up by trading Leivo.

Pretty sure that's one of the signs of the apocalypse.

Yes, and he can just accept the qualifying offer, and after that one-year deal he's a UFA.

So it may look like a really smart thing for a team to do, but it's not without risk.

what's the risk? he takes the qualifying, which brings him to UFA?

Yup.

If the Leafs do the same strategy, Marner accepts the one-year qualifying offer, and he's a UFA at the age of 26.

That's not when you want your best players walking away.

Of course, that's exactly what we are doing with Matthews...

Unless, Marner actually wants to be here.. Then, he can sign long term instead of the 1 yr QO
