It is impossible to write or talk about Marner without offending someone, so here is my attempt at a bias-free take: It’s tense and personal. My belief is Toronto is willing to go to an $11-million AAV, but only if he signs for seven years. I’d heard both sides might agree to two years — then let arbitration sort it out — but a few sources threw cold water on that. I mentioned during a radio hit last week the rumour that Marner’s representatives pitched a three-year contract with a structure similar to the Meier/Werenski setup, with the third season as high as $15 million. However, I’m told that was several months ago and is no longer relevant, although both sides have continued to explore that kind of an option. I don’t sense things are anywhere close.

Well usually when someone goes off managing skills over “ niceness” it deserves a “what the (frank) are you thinking”
So yes a “come on man” was well deserved. |

Tavares is really getting stomped on in respect to how (frank)ing good he is, its Hilarious how its being trotted out there that Marner made him
Marner need to give 30% of his new contract to Tavares - senstroll
The biggest thing to me is marner is a gifted playmaker, but at the end of the day he needs a good goal scorer on his line. Sure he would boost the stats of a Joey crabb but he wouldn’t become an elite goal scorer over night because of marner.
Matthews can score and dish the puck. His shot is lethal and can do things all on his own.
Marner can skate by 4 players and triple deke the goalie and score but it happens about once a season. |

You could be right, but......
The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary minus signing bonus), and at minimum must meet the seasons minimum salary requirements:
110% of the base salary if the base salary is less than or equal to $660,000
105% of the base salary if the base salary is greater than $660,000 or less than $1,000,000. However, this qualifying offer cannot exceed $1,000,000.
100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.
CBA Reference 10.2 (a) (ii)
It is possible that Doug Wilson is a little smarter than we might give him credit for. Meier got a $3.3 Million signing bonus. - winsix
It's complicated sh1t like this that people like us...on these boards specifically...don't understand about the negotiating process.
It's not just cap hit and years. SOOOOOO many other little nuances to the contract structure that are....probably...even more important. That is the stuff they go back and forth on. IMHO. |

Marner scored some beauties last year. Him and JT are good for each other. I don't know why guys go all the way one way or the other either, they both benefit. |

Not saying he’s bad at all, just that I wouldn’t give him the Matthews money. Is he near it yes, but he isn’t better or equal to Matthews. |
