You could be right, but......

The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary minus signing bonus), and at minimum must meet the seasons minimum salary requirements:
110% of the base salary if the base salary is less than or equal to $660,000
105% of the base salary if the base salary is greater than $660,000 or less than $1,000,000. However, this qualifying offer cannot exceed $1,000,000.
100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.

It is possible that Doug Wilson is a little smarter than we might give him credit for. Meier got a $3.3 Million signing bonus.

I think that is correct, except that I read it as being based on the base salary in the final year; so in the last year Meier is at $10m with no signing bonus.

I give Doug Wilson a ton of credit. He has done a marvelous job if keeping SJ relevant for many years. He has been creative, drafted well, traded well, and signed well. He's a great GM.

I will also give agents credit for also understanding the CBA. Meier isn't walked into UFA after this contract, and there was a lot of discussion already about how the reason he took a sweetheart deal like this is that SJ will have to qualify him at a $10m salary in his last year - so he will get paid at least one more year at a minimum of $10m - unless SJ chooses not to qualify him.

This deal either lets Meier enter UFA a year earlier, or it guarantees that his salary is in excess of $10m when this contract expires.

I'm not sure Zacha is the comparable you want to bring up here.

Has never eclipsed 25 pts in a season, and has a career 76pts in 201 games. Marner hit 76pts in his 99th NHL game.

I wouldn't say he's worth $8m more, but he's worth a substantial amount more.

I would love to know what offers are on the table from the Leafs and what Marner wants. That way I would know who to be angry at that he hasn't signed yet
