Yeah they were speculating, but really they were saying that they wanted to see a little more fire. They would have liked to see Dubas let Nylander sit. A lot of people here feel the same way.

I also think there is a time when the GM should come out and stir the pot a bit. So far, Dubas has done a lot of the respectful, nice guy, stuff.

I trust him to handle things better than I would, but I would enjoy seeing him come out and say they have offered over-market and now the player signs or we trade him.

I think that is correct, except that I read it as being based on the base salary in the final year; so in the last year Meier is at $10m with no signing bonus.

I give Doug Wilson a ton of credit. He has done a marvelous job if keeping SJ relevant for many years. He has been creative, drafted well, traded well, and signed well. He's a great GM.

I will also give agents credit for also understanding the CBA. Meier isn't walked into UFA after this contract, and there was a lot of discussion already about how the reason he took a sweetheart deal like this is that SJ will have to qualify him at a $10m salary in his last year - so he will get paid at least one more year at a minimum of $10m - unless SJ chooses not to qualify him.

This deal either lets Meier enter UFA a year earlier, or it guarantees that his salary is in excess of $10m when this contract expires.

The only thing it guarantees is that a QO must be in excess of 10M. It doesn't guarantee that he will get that QO or sign for that much. He still has to perform, right?
