Not trying to shame you at all for this.

But I was recently in Europe and I learned how rude it is to ask about careers/school to people when meeting people.

Like legit, it’s something you don’t talk about with people unless they are very close to you.

Just wanted to share that lol, I just found it interesting how the US/Canada is one of the few countries where it’s acceptable and encourages to do what you did.

I've always found that the idea that conversation always steers towards career in NA is odd, I personally try to avoid that conversation altogether because it gives an indicator of salary, which is something that I never talk about either, and secondly because why the hell would you want to talk to a stranger about work on your free time?

I have a friend who decided to follow a similar career path than I did because he thought my job sounded cool and I seemed to live a decent life.

Now, everytime I see him, he tries to talk to me about work.

I don't think we can be friends for much longer.

If I had to hear one more story about unfortunate pole dancing accidents, I'd probably cease my relationship with my fellow stripper friend as well.

Uhm?? Gardiner himself? Babcock?

So I’m glad you chose to ignore that part. Gardiner was playing sheltered mins with Dermott last year.

So to go with your “you can only compare D corps at the end of the year”

Barrie>>>>>>>>>>>Gardiner
Depth 2019>depth2020
Dermott2019>2018(I mean we are hoping he follows the trend of players getting better at 22......)
Ceci=Z(they both are average 3rd pairing d)

Add in that Lil and Sandin both have shots at being factors by years end

Also add in that there is still a TDL and an entire season to add to the D....back to your “you can only compare D corps at the end of the year”

- Santo_44

And yet Gardner was no worse than Barrie defensively, actually better. Colorado knows how bad Barrie is in his end. He only started 35% percent of his zone starts in the D zone. He also got number 1 unit PP time. Gardiner 1:52 PP TOI, Barrie 4:30. Teams are going to grind Barrie into the corner night in night out. I would temper my expectations of Barrie. And a side note, despite putting up 20 points more than Gardiner playing with a top 5 line in the NHL he was still a minus 19.

Also, Z wasn't playing with Reilly. Ceci is at the moment, meaning on the road he will face the top line.

Absolutely, I seriously never realized how common it is here and now that I’m back I realize it’s the root of almost every interaction I’ve been having.

It makes total sense, Canada has developed this social hierarchy with careers and salaries.

This one guy I met in Spain said the same thing as you. He said in Europe people like to make real connections and knowing eachothers salaries can ruin any potential connection.

One of my good buddies from high school just went full on career mode after school.

He does nothing but work and talk about work....we don’t hang out anymore and same goes for the majority of old friends he has. It’s sad.

Plus minus is garbage.

Don’t use TOI for judging players man.
Come on you are better than this.

And Gardiner played better defensively getting sheltered on the 3rd pairing playing 14 mins a night? You don’t say.

And Ceci is playing with Rielly? Man I didn’t know the season already started.

it makes for really boring conversation unless by some miracle you both have fun jobs. who the (frank) wants to hear about someone's pipe fabrication job. if you're an artist, musician or something legitimately cool then yeah, i probably do want to hear about it. a regular 9-5 though? get the (frank) outta here. my mind shuts off as soon as conversations steer in that direction.

Gardiner has been better over his career defensively than Barrie. 35% d zone starts - That's gotta be the lowest in the NHL. Barrie and Ceci will without a doubt be worse in their end than any of Hainsey, Z, or Gardiner.

As far as plus/minus, the team had mostly good numbers. Calvert was the second worst -10, then Kerfoot, our new shutdown centre, at -8. Barrie was the worst despite being on the ice for so many goals for. So it matters to some degree.

I’ve made a big effort to try and stop asking people. It is an easy way out when you don’t know what to talk about but (frank), who knew giving a compliment would stem a better conversion the Europeans know how to live man.

Why?

How?

Because he has had more defensive zone starts?

You do realize the more you get the puck out and are in the O zone the less you have to defend right? Do you understand that?

One of the best conversation starters I learned was what do you like to do for fun? Or what's the story behind that tattoo/hat/whatever.

What I can't stand more than anything is extended conversations around what tv shows people are watching.

Or conversations about comparison shopping and then 'pulling the trigger' on that purchase.

I think you immediately jump into this dark space with your presumptions.

I'm not going to claim that Ceci is anything more than he is. But if you ask less of him and ask him to be Rielly's Hainsey (or essentially the Methot-role that allowed Karlsson to excel), it may suit him more than asking him to do more than he's capable of. The brain farts will remain. Mistakes will happen. it's not like Hainsey was very good either. Ceci will see similar competition with more support around him.

Barrie was playing against tougher competition than Gardiner was, so claiming Gardiner was better defensively is probably an unfair comparison. Barrrie was the 2nd string D-pair at ES, while Gardiner was on the 3rd string for the later part of the year. Gardiner also did a lot less last year.

No one is expecting Barrie to be a defensive stalwart, but he brings more to the table than Gardiner did - especially last year's Jake, who, when he wasn't injured, sometimes seemed stuck in his head about what to do - and that hesitation showed.

No one is expecting Ceci to be a Norris winner, but as a guy who is playing the Hainsey role - honestly, we're not asking for much. "Stay there and move your stick around. If someone comes near you with the puck, call for help. Tear up a little. The fetal position along the goal line isn't entirely uncalled for."

But on a player-player / role-for-role perspective, I think they are improved over last year.

(frank)ing Canada eh?

Great country but you are absolutely right. It’s work and Netflix for half of our population.

I’d love for that part of our culture to change.
