This means absolutely nothing.

The agent doesn't care.

Nor should he.

I doubt Dubas cares as well.

I'd do $12 milly in the final year.

His next contract would be after a new CBA and a new US TV contract.

You qualify him at 1 year, $12 million, and then negotiate.

$12 million for a top forward in 2022-23 isn't that bad.

- Atomic Wedgie

What do you think Marner is worth, realistically, right now on a 1 year deal - ignoring term and all other factors?

Is he worth $10m? If he is, with escalation based on cap increases of 2.4%, 4% and 4%, his salary ends up at $11.1m in year 4.

If he's worth $11m, then his salary ends up at 12.2m in year 4.

If he's $10.5, it's 11.6m.

I've sort of felt from the get-go that $10.5 is that top-end number that we should go to for an RFA with lots of talent and one really good year. And that is an overpayment.

Well, the reason he would use Dreger as a puppet is to garner public sympathy or public outrage that the Leafs aren't being reasonable. Why else would you leak any of this to the media to begin with? Or at least keep leaking information when you've realized that it's not going to generate the public pressure that you desire.

Negativity towards Marner affects his brand and his marketability, so making him look greedy is not in the agent's nor his client's best interests.

Give them all C’s, here’s a C and there’s a C, everyone gets a C. Wouldn’t want to hurt any of these millionaires feelings.

Mitch signed yet?

FML, what are the RFA’s doing?

I don't disagree. I was thinking something along the lines of ...

yr 1 = 7
yr 2 = 7
yr 3 = 11.643 to match AM going forward.

That's about 3 x 8.6 AAV.

It sounds like his camp wants an AAV to what Mattews got.

And while I don't blame him for asking I think it's too much. If the Leafs have to trade Marner because they disagree on where he sits financially within their structure then so be it. I love him but I think it'll handcuff them and make winning a championship too difficult. I'd definitely be shopping for options.

That all being said ....Ferris has an extensive history of being difficult to negotiate with until the season begins. So why note posture hard right until the final minute (and a little beyond).

Auston Matthews is the best 5-on-5 goal scorer in the NHL. John Tavares saw a 4 point bump playing with Marner in Toronto last season - Marner saw a 25 point bump. There’s more to it than that but can’t blame Toronto for not offering Marner Matthews money / term.

Swap out Bozak for Tavares Last season.

Nobody can convince me that Marner is better or deserves the same or more than Matthews.

Maybe making the Two rivers folk all people of colour is meant to highlight how different Rand and the Aiel all look? Dunno.

That's because he's not as good as Matthews, and therefore not worth Matthews money.

Absolutely

I think as fans, if it’s true he’s turned down a 7x11 we can be upset about that.

Maybe it’s his agent and father giving him bad advice....

Whatever, wait until Rantanen signs. Marner can’t argue he deserves much more than him.
