That's because he's not as good as Matthews, and therefore not worth Matthews money. - PatC80
Its funny, everyone just looks at the points and says he is close to Matthews, but the truth is Matthews is a C, and a 40+ goal scorer, who will likely a bunch of times score 50 in his career.
He desevers to get paid, but not Matthews money. These salaries are out of control for RFAs |

I'll give him points, a lot of that credit has to go to Tavares though.. Marner had a 25 point jump..
Matthews is better at everything else. |

Swap out Bozak for Tavares Last season.
Nobody can convince me that Marner is better or deserves the same or more than Matthews. - senstroll
Swap out Matthews for Bozak and we wouldn’t be paying Nylander $7m either

I think as fans, if it’s true he’s turned down a 7x11 we can be upset about that.
Maybe it’s his agent and father giving him bad advice....
Whatever, wait until Rantanen signs. Marner can’t argue he deserves much more than him. - Santo_44
Honestly I don't give a sh!t how much he makes - but because of the cap and Leaf's current cap hit, there is only so much to give without unloading a player and weakening the team. I'm pretty sure Marner gets that, maybe his idiot father and imbecile agent will also get it when Braydon Point signs for 7 x $9.5

You are not getting Tkachuk and a 1st.
You might be able to make a deal straight-up or a small add on Calgary's part.
Let's not forget, the team trading for Marner has to then sign him and in the case of Tkachuk, Marner is going to cost more. As long as he is unsigned, he is also tougher to trade. - Aetherial
i would love that 😍 |

I don’t care what he’s turned down or asked for. I just care what he signs for. He also realizes that his leverage is weakened the closer we get to the start of the season. Leafs can’t afford to sign him in season as this year’s hit goes way up. |

What do you think Marner is worth, realistically, right now on a 1 year deal - ignoring term and all other factors?
Is he worth $10m? If he is, with escalation based on cap increases of 2.4%, 4% and 4%, his salary ends up at $11.1m in year 4.
If he's worth $11m, then his salary ends up at 12.2m in year 4.
If he's $10.5, it's 11.6m.
I've sort of felt from the get-go that $10.5 is that top-end number that we should go to for an RFA with lots of talent and one really good year. And that is an overpayment. - Monkeypunk
I don't think you can answer that question without factoring in term.
One year only? $7.5 million. |

Has anyone heard about the status of Dermott?
I thought we were expecting a return in November or December, but Kevin McGran's article in the Star yesterday sorta suggests there's a possibility he is ready for opening night. |

Marner sign yet? - BestRapperAlive
He keeps refusing to sign Dubas' offers, because he thinks they are too high.
"I'm all about what's on the front of the jersey, not the back," said Marner. "Dubas has to understand that I want a fair contract, but one that leaves a lot of money on the table to make the Leafs stronger in other areas. Like, if I take a $2 million haircut, couldn't we get someone better on defence than Marincin?" |

I hope it's true. Last I heard was November as well. I'd heard that Hyman was progressing better than expected. Even if we get Dermott back in October it's a win. |

Probably because he hasn't said any of this and I just made it up.
Although the bit about Marincin does sound very plausible... |

"In the 11million universe" could mean 10.25-10.5million as well.
Easiest way out of this is give Marner Matthews-like money on a 5y deal as well.
"We can and we will get it done" seems quite an odd remark after a holdout, bad contract and unsigned rfa into training camp |

And jt had a 10 goal jump.
So no alot of that doesnt mean it was all jt. Players improve as they grow.
Both jt and marner benefitted from playing together snd you could see a maturity in marners game from the previous year. Thats sll him. |
