Far too much "Babying" of Matthews.
Toews,Crosby.....and many other stars take on leadership roles at very young age. Matthews should be named captain, and he should be on FIRST PP, and he should be playing 18-20 minutes a night. Let him run...let him lead....take the leash off the guy and see what he can do. - hawk35
Yeah but then he might get a big head and want 11 million a yearš¤¦āāļø |

Would love to see Rielly with the āCā... however, I have the feeling Matthews will bolt to AZ after this contract if he doesnāt get everything he wants so give it to him and hope he becomes a lifelong leaf...
Also, Marner for Tkachuk and a 1st... |

I think we all love the Captain Morgan moniker a bit too much but he has paid his dues.
Tavares has shown he can do it.
Matthews is the franchise player.
Any one is a good choice. Personally, I'd give it to Matthews. He is your franchise player. He wanted to sign an 8 year deal, but went shorter term on less money to give time to find a longer deal. We might feel the 11.6 is an over payment, but projections had him at more, so maybe that's where it's supposed to be?
Out of curiousity, I looked at the other captains out there - Crosby was never a captain on his younger teams - probably because he was younger and there were always older kids ahead of him; Toews was a captain on his midget team when he was 14, but not through USHS nor NCAA - not until the Hawks named him their captain. Tavares was captain of Oshawa in his final year there, but was not captain on his former teams. McDavid, similarly, was captain of Erie in his final year, but was not captain previously.
Previous experience isn't really a factor. When you think that it's been 11 years since we've had a captain or a captain-worthy player on the roster, having this many options is pretty sweet. |

It's obviously going to be Matthews. Tavares is mature enough to not care if he's a C and has been one already. Matthews is the big first overall centre draft pick, it's obviously him.
The question is, will Marner's dad go loco when Marner doesn't even get an A cause for sure Johnny Toronto and Mo Rielly get one.
That's what I think. He had his opportunity. I actually thought a stand up guy like him would have gone to management and told them to give Matthews the C. |

We don't really know anything for sure.
I am still guessing that there is just a lot of noise out there and this is really just about holding out until the last possible moment and/or not wanting to go first.
I am betting Marner signs on October 1 for something close to what is being speculated, and it is going to be something absolutely stupid like 8.5/ 9.5 /12.

So Friedman said the Leafs offered 11x7 and Marner said no
What the actual (frank)
Also Chris Johnston says the Marner camp is pushing hard for 3 years with a huge 3rd year salary and the leafs are having none of it. - Santo_44
I heard this morning the leafs offered 11 x 7 in July - they turned it down.
They also turned down a 10 x 3 offer.
If true, even though Marner is our best points getting of the past several decades, he needs to be moved or sat.
Sick of greedy players. |

Heard this morning, the leafs may be waiting to announce captaincy until after marner is signed.
Again just speculation.

If he turned down 10x3 he needs to lay off the space cake.
Hell if Dubas offered 10x3 he needs to lay off the space cake. |

Not saying young (and big holy (frank)) Brazeau didn't do well here.
But is there a more meaningless tournament than the rookie tournament?
Except the CFL maybe? |

Dreger was too busy posting a few tweets about the Leafs offering a 3 million over payment and the Marner camp turning it down. |

I didn't watch all of it but from what I did see, he scored a few nice goals. Same with the wasted 2nd round pick Robertson. |
