Over a 7 span, maybe a little more than 5mm.

But its not near 20mm. Lets be honest. This isnt the nba.

The best in the game make 2 - 4 milly per year in endorsements.

Not now he isnt. If they win a cup, quite possibly.
Crosby makes just over 4 as the top two player in the league, the face of the league for a while and 3 time cup champ.
Stamkos makes about 1.5ish

Ya i guess he could make 10mm or so iver 7 years maybe. But he could do close to that in another hockey hotbed too.

- Fakepartofme

Apart from Ovechkin, hard to find a more marketable player than Marner.
He'll sign 16th of Sept

Marner easily will get 2mln per year in endorsements
- MaximusAurelius

Its not as much as you would think. These arent huge NA companies, most are local ones.

Just because Matthews is being used as a comparable by Marner's agent doesn't mean he deserves the same contract.

I'd take Matthews before Marner. No doubt about it.

Should Marner receive less than Matthews? I think so.

Should it MUCH less? I don't think so.

Don't massively disagree with anything you've said.

Which is why I think if he was offered 7 x 11 and refused it? We're done here.

If a GM in the NHL is starting a team and gets to pick who they want....

How many take Matthews?

And how many take Marner?

My guess is it wouldn't even be close.

- .HOHO.

No doubt..

Matthews would be the choice

Where did this "he turned down 11 x 7" come from?

Friedman says "My belief is Toronto is willing to go to an $11-million AAV, but only if he signs for seven years"

Friedman also believed that Willie was going to be traded.

Tsn.ca current cover story. Paul Marner... Erm Dreger, is saying the same thing.

Elite? No, I'm not saying you'll find a Marner on the open market easy breezy.

I may have worded it poopty, my point is that it's an easier skillset to find, easier position to fill... and I'll stand by that all day.

- joel878
That's fair. I thought you were talking about a Marner level player.

A couple in the game make that. Most are cup winners. Except maybe mcjesus.
Either way, marner could still get endorsement money in another hockey hotbed city.

That reported 3 yr deal, where he gets $15M in salary in the 3rd year, will hurt us.

I have no idea why he's holding us hostage. Marner was supposed to be the easy one to sign of the big 3.

I guess, Werenski was a big fan of the Blue Jackets growing up.

did the Leafs side leak some of the Marner contract stuff? the 15mil QO stuff is nuts

Mitch needs to get something done soon, if they turned down 11 x 7 ..like wtf

We know the answer to WTF.

Marner: I have led the team in scoring the last 2 seasons and played more games, why am I getting less dollars and more term than Matthews.

This is the grand sum total of their arguments. They will simply repeat this reasoning regardless of any counter-points like winger vs. center, goals vs. assists, big disparity in linemates, comparables on other teams etc.

We still know nothing for sure, but I think there is too much to ignore the evidence that HE (not his agent, HIM) is being a greedy little poop. PPP had a write up about Marner becoming a villain. Obviously that is a little over-dramatic, but I think there is no question he is damaging his reputation with the fans.

I guess he is banking on everything being forgiven and forgotten the first time he makes a great play. He is probably right.

Heard this morning, the leafs may be waiting to announce captaincy until after marner is signed.
Again just speculation.

- Fakepartofme

I think it's more likely Marner's camp are waiting to see if the PA votes to end the CBA this coming Sunday. I think that's why most, if not all the other RFAs are waiting too.
I think it gets done early next week after that is resolved.

Also, I think most of the 'insiders' are full of BS, for never once relating the two.

Agreed - I wonder if Sweeney transitioning into the GM role that year had any impact on the 1st round that year.
- RickJames77

Zboril and DeBrusk were fine picks at the time. Snatch Zenassyen was insane. Way too much hope that playing down the lineup hid a superstar.

Im getting the impression his representation has decided he can't sign anything longer than 3 years. Being able to cash in again when he's 25 is their key.

Although Ferris is a career (frank) up, the flames are loving his representation every time Johnny hockey takes a shift.

If it's Marner making a "heel" turn.

Might as well ask for a trade to the Habs and go full evil.

I know there is agents involved and we haven't seen the contract he will eventually sign. But imo there is a litle of the not seeing the forest for the trees.

he could make 11mil and signed it a long time ago, and be done with it... now its getting bad for Marner, fans are starting to turn. He had it made, he is the fan favorite, would make a bajillion dollars in endorsements until he dies, win a cup with the Leafs and he is the greatest alltime leaf in a lot of fans eyes.

he could do no wrong.

A lot of the people who i wouldnt expect are just saying trade him, its not worth the BS

- senstroll

Do you think it is time for Dubas to drop a couple different take it or leave it offers give him a couple days and tell him after that, he is being shopped.

We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but I have to think, at some point, that Dubas starts to play hardball.

If it means nothing to him to be a Leaf, then no big loss, we will get other big piece(s)... or he plays in Europe next year.

Or he (frank)s the Leafs completely by signing a mediocre offersheet, 6 weeks into the season, and the Leafs can't match without trading someone.

At the end of the day you can only go on physical scouting, all the other rankings, your gut and luck. Sometimes a giant leap works, sometimes it doesn't, like 90% of the Garth Snow Islanders first rounders, Mark "The Janitor" Jankowski and "I'm 22 years old Tikhonov."
