Apart from Ovechkin, hard to find a more marketable player than Marner.
He'll sign 16th of Sept

- MaximusAurelius

Mitch Marner, his agent and dad have assured that is no longer true.

I think it's more likely Marner's camp are waiting to see if the PA votes to end the CBA this coming Sunday. I think that's why most, if not all the other RFAs are waiting too.
I think it gets done early next week after that is resolved.

Also, I think most of the 'insiders' are full of BS, for never once relating the two.

- oldstyle

Good point, I think the CBA decision might have a lot to do with this also.

Over a 7 span, maybe a little more than 5mm.

But its not near 20mm. Lets be honest. This isnt the nba.

- Fakepartofme

I agree that its not 20M over 7 years, but could definitely be over 5M

Mitch needs to get something done soon, if they turned down 11 x 7 ..like wtf

- senstroll

Maybe he thought it was 11 years at 7 million?????

Do you think it is time for Dubas to drop a couple different take it or leave it offers give him a couple days and tell him after that, he is being shopped.

We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but I have to think, at some point, that Dubas starts to play hardball.

If it means nothing to him to be a Leaf, then no big loss, we will get other big piece(s)... or he plays in Europe next year.

Or he (frank)s the Leafs completely by signing a mediocre offersheet, 6 weeks into the season, and the Leafs can't match without trading someone.

- Aetherial

I think you give his agent permission to work out a contract with other teams. That'll send the point.

Id would be interesting if the NHLPA decided to open the CBA again, and the Leafs got creative and gave out a large signing bonus to Marner for the potential lockout year to try and lower the overall amount.

Very unlikely obviously.

If it's Marner making a "heel" turn.

Might as well ask for a trade to the Habs and go full evil.

- Scabeh

Marner: Trade me, I prefer going to the Habs
Dubas: Enjoy your time in Switzerland, or Ottawa.

Tsn.ca current cover story. Paul Marner... Erm Dreger, is saying the same thing.
- joel878

Well to be fair it says he was offered 11 milly ....maybe that was the 8 yr number. And the Leafs don't really have 11 milly to put on the table now.

But the most interested tidbit, if true, is ..that the proposal would repay him the 1.6 x 3 that Lou "robbed" him of on his ELC.

If any of that is true I'd definitely be working the phones.

If this drags on into the season, I don't think he will be forgiven

I know there is agents involved and we haven't seen the contract he will eventually sign. But imo there is a litle of the not seeing the forest for the trees.

he could make 11mil and signed it a long time ago, and be done with it... now its getting bad for Marner, fans are starting to turn. He had it made, he is the fan favorite, would make a bajillion dollars in endorsements until he dies, win a cup with the Leafs and he is the greatest alltime leaf in a lot of fans eyes.

he could do no wrong.

A lot of the people who i wouldnt expect are just saying trade him, its not worth the BS

- senstroll

He is not worried.

Can sit out a month or two...first game back that he has a 4 point night, he is the "Golden Boy" again and the Love-fest is on. Just the way it is...

I don't know.. Some people are still pissed at Nylander for his holdout.. When all he wanted was long term security and a guarantee he wouldn't be traded.

i think if nothing is close then they need to explore trading him soon.
The Leafs are looking to win a cup now, so they need to see what they can get if he is going to sit

Lol ..."guarantee he wouldnt be traded". Jesus.

Those fans will quickly move on once he gets back to scoring 60pts again.
Winning changes everything.

If this team can finally get past the 1st round and hopefully the 2nd and willie and marner are a big part of that.
No one will care about the hold outs.

This is the circular logic that I'm stuck on. I don't think the players have fared well in either of the lockouts. The owners got what they wanted, and the players got rolled back, and minor tweaks.

If the players go into another lockout - the star players know that they have $7 - $10m annually there for them, but they are upset about escrow payments. So the answer is to reduce all salaries by the 15% escrow payment, adjust all forecasting, and make the salary cap set retroactively by last year's performance as opposed to the upcoming projected year. That's lock out talk if I ever heard it.

If you're a player with an unsigned contract, you might want to get some salary protection in there now in the form of up front bonus money.

So why wait? What is the benefit to waiting?
