You know that hockey players mostly just leave it up to their agents, right?
- Tomahawk

yeah mostly...

and you realize the player has the final say?

That's misleading. They leave the negotiations to their agents but players have and do say what they want and what they're looking for in a new deal and what they'll accept. Certainly a lot of that is based on the advice of their agent but it's not just left to the agents. I know you said mostly but players have significant input.

It's just funny that people make these negotiations a reflection on Marner (and now TK's) personal character. Three guys in a room, two have suits on and one's a hockey player who may or may not have a HS diploma. Which two guys do you think are driving the conversation on particulars?

If you ask a player about these RFA negotiations, most of them are saying "if something is close, my agent will let me know, until then, I'm not gonna worry".

- Tomahawk

Well of course, like I said, the player is not involved in day to day negotiations but they of course have final say and call the shots. I agree that it shouldn't be a reflection on the players character but the player does have the ability to direct their agent to get the best deal they can and get it done with the urgency that training camp opening tomorrow deserves. It's ridiculous that they can't get Konecny signed. He's a good player but he's not that good.

Newport Sports as a vested interest in maximizing their commission. Part of their job is selling their clients on their maximum theoretical worth, based on comparables, trends, etc.

Most players just want to play hockey and get paid fairly. Most impasses are due to agents and team execs taking opposite extreme positions.

Yes. He may not even be in the room until tonight or tomorrow morning saying I’ll take this deal. Just look at fletchers statement. Far away and comes together quickly. Time will tell. And I agree with most. Thought this is and easy 2-3 year deal around 3.5-4 mil per.

The opposite extreme positions are what should've been taken back in May and June as a negotiation tactic. They should be near middle ground at this point. Werenski and his agent found it. The player has the authority to move the agent from that opposite extreme position.

The fact that German Rubtsov was much better in all three zones with lesser linemates, while returning from a rough injury riddled season. Anything else you’d like to challenge me on, big guy?

Sheesh. Ever have you ever become a regular at a restaurant or a bar and ownership goes out of his/her way to belittle you? You should get into management, Bill. It’s just sports talk.

The agents in the back of their minds, or in the forefront in my opinion, they should be worried about the players necessary time to join training camp in order to best learn all the systems, processes, and controls, more so with a brand new coaching staff. That has to be taken into account to maximize his clients production on the ice and for future contracts, no? For Provy I kind of understand, but I don't understand the impasse for the TK talks whatsoever.

it is that time of the month...

It was one game, the big camp we will see how it shakes out...

I wouldn't mind Ruby be 3rw

he is still using a translator, I find that odd, maybe it is just with the press and he doesn't want to misstep.

Don't sleep on Vorobyev

I know learning English was slow for him Ruby

Bill any insight?

- wcorvette

Rubtsov's English is still fairly limited. Vorobyev speaks English among teammates, and has been for the last year, but never around the media.

you make it sound like the player is divorced from the situation. Most likely the agent sits down with the Player, shows them comparables and they come up with a range on what the contract should look like. I agree the suits negotiate, I also believe when a legit offer is made the agent shares it with the player, probably required too. The process itself keeps the player engaged and helps the player believe what their value should be.

I truly believe hockey players are the most down to earth athletes but to think they just want to play hockey is probably giving them a little too much credit. They have a 5-10 year window to make their income...

One tweets says that the TK impasse is that the Flyers are leaning on the fact that TK only gets 14 TOI nightly. TK counter is most all of his points are ES points...

Sad truth is, from the agents' perspective, players are a commodity in continuous supply. If Nylander misses half the season but still scores that $45M contract, that's all that matters. If his career is hampered by it, there's always another high draft pick to latch on to. If AMac signs $30M and ends up getting buried and bought out, the agent still made his cut. Etc.

And that’s my point. I kind of draw the line on attacking Bill. It’s disgusting. Bill has always been fair and gives a lot insight that we can’t get elsewhere. And a poster talks to him like a child and attacks him. It really is disgusting. But I’ll ease up.

Didn't we all watch Flyers hockey again last night? Season's about to start. Eagles look decent. Phillies are still in a WC chase. Why all the animosity? We're the city of Brotherly Love and we sip scotch.

Thank you! Right or wrong, I'm just expressing how I feel. Sure, I don’t always have my facts right, I make ridiculous spelling errors and I’m pretty defensive. With this said, I to give my honest opinion.

baseball players crack me up. Ichiro fro example needed an interpreter his entire time here, which is a joke to me. Same with a lot of the south American layers.
