If they knew valimaki was going to miss the whole season they wouldn’t have let him go in the first place. It’s a depth signing nothing more. Wouldn’t look into it to hard. Who else was available for right handed D?
Brodie are Frolik are all but gone now?
Any thoughts on the rookies games? Little more meaningful than this. |

Todd Cordell: Calgary Flames double down on mistake, bring back Michael Stone - ToddCordellCGY
Cant really get behind your article Todd. Stone is a very functional bottom pairing dman. Hardly played last year because of blood clot. There's the ole saying better the devil you know than the one you dont. Flames know exactly what they have & know Stone is familiar with the existing D. The other thing you seem to be really not considering in your judgement of this move is the fact we need to get Tkachuk & Mangi signed.
It has been eloquently said that the dumping ground for teams is closed. Frolik may have your fancy stats but the market to help the Flames with their cap & getting Tkachuk signed isnt there without paying a dear price. Frolik's value is at the TDL.
Stone is a RHD & can give the vet support & steady the bottom pairing with Kyllington.
Andersson is ready to be tutored by Gio for that top pairing. Brodie has a market & will bring back a return now. We need cap space now & not at the TDL. It would be sad to have to sacrifice Brodie to get the two RFA's to fit in the cap. We wont be able to afford Brodie next year anyway. Your article in my opinion isnt looking at the big picture. Macdonald can also be signed as the #7 at the same price if Flames arent comfortable with Davison. Any of these contracts can be put on waivers & buried in the AHL as well. Dont see the issue. |

I honestly thought this was against the rules.
Hell, it might be, but the league probably saw it was Stone and went "You know what, Brad? You do you. Whatever." |

I didn't think teams could buy out a player, and re-sign them within a calendar year.. similar to how they cannot trade a RFA that was matched on an offer sheet. I thought this is why Washington sent Orpik out last year, and brought him back post buyout. You learn something new every day. |

I mean, I guess instead of paying $3.5 million for a poopty defenseman you're only paying $1.8 million for a poopty defenseman? |

"I honestly thought this was against the rules."
BINGO!, so did I. Ends up, if the player is bought out via a "compliance buyout" - those special things that teams got to do twice (i think) that removed the CAP hit completely, the bought out player could not rejoin the team for a period of one year.
Normal buyouts have no such provision. See the CBA - page 288, section 50.9.(i) "Ordinary Course Buy-Outs" and "Compliance Buy-Outs." |

Difference is we arent paying 1.17 to play against us, now we are paying $1.8to play for us & we saved $500K in real money & $1.7 in cap space without changing a thing. Pretty good eh?

If you look up mismanaged you’ll see a picture of the Oilers management I’m sure of that. |

Rumor has it that you are a donkey and that Oilers fans are still living in the 80's rocking their greasy mullets, listening to Van Halen and eating perogies. |

As did I, which is why I looked it up.
As others have said already, it turns out that there is nothing in the CBA stopping a team from doing this unless it is a Compliance Buyout.
As for the signing itself, Stone is still a completely servicable 5/6 defenseman and at a League mininum one year deal this is pretty much as risk-free as it gets. Easy to bury in the minors of things go horribly wrong and he's still a good 5/6 D-man and is already familiar with the organization and the system.
Good signing that has zero risk. |
