The D has the right number of LHD and RHD but the quality isn't there. They have guys who can score points but actually play defense and kill penalties, I'm not convinced, especially for the playoffs.

Marner plays well in all zones. I'm not worried about him living up to his deal. He's not missing camp or real games. He also has more natural talent and skills overall.

I wouldn't say that I'm all that convinced either, but the team is clearly - from top to bottom - not built on any type of traditional defense. Pressure the puck with speed, cause turnovers, and push the puck up to the offense.

They will likely continue to perform poorly against the cycle.

I think that works in the regular season and really breaks down in the playoffs.

They will likely continue to perform poorly against the cycle, I agree and they will also perform the cycle poorly when on the attack. And that eats up a lot of time if a team does it correctly.

Last year the Habs were only 4 points behind us. Imagine if after these signings they had a bad year and we missed??? Freddy pulls a groin and we don’t make the show? Talk about Muskoka... Waffles would reappear...

Yep. I have heard from sources that there are several teams that are prepared to give up assets so they can move out salary just so they can try to send him an offersheet that they know he won't sign. Then they can explain to their owner why they gave up assets to have extra cap space that they don't need.
- Thecakeisalie

There was a guy arguing today that there are countless teams that would move salary to sign Marner to an offer sheet. Including Arizona.

Dubas leaked that info at the perfect time and his agent caved in, just like a lot of people knew he would because he's done this so many times before.

In the end though, Marner did get 10.8 so the negotiation tactics worked for both sides eventually.

Team is too good. Imo they under performed in the regular season last year.

We all ripped Babcock last year, but he’ll get this team to the playoffs. What they do after who knows, but he doesn’t let guys get away with much.

Fun Fact:
Babcock has lost 8 of the last 9 playoffs rounds he has coached...

Team is now 13.8 Million over the cap. Can someone explain how the LTIR stuff works? Horton and Clarkson will save us 13.8??

A lot of teams that won the Cup fired their coach either the year they won it or shortly before they won it.

Babcock did a lot of great work to get this team to where it is today but they might need to fire him and bring somebody else in to finish the job. Reality is, he's only got one Cup to his name and he's been in the league for almost 20 years now.

Horton, Clarkson, Hyman and Dermott all on the LTIR.

They will also send down 3 or 4 guys after camp.

Capfriendly has too many guys on their list because it's training camp.

Ben Harpur, for example, is listed as one of the 8 D. He's terrible and he makes the most out of all the filler defense. He should be gone. That's 725K saved.

They also have 13 forwards so if they send down Petan, Shore or Agostino, that's another 725K to 775K saved.

1.5 million, plus 10.5 from the Horton and Clarkson LTIR, that's 12 million total.

Plus the Dermott and Hyman LTIR savings, which are harder to calculate because we don't know how much time they will miss.

Definitely going to be a tightrope all season long. Luckily, the Marlies are down the road so calling guys up and sending them down will be quick and easy.

The last few times were a young leafs team that we were all ecstatic that they even made the playoffs. And before that was an aging Detroit team that most fans were expecting to fail to even make the playoffs for several years, yet they kept doing it anyways until they finally couldn't.

When he had a good team in it's prime, he actually won a cup. He also made the finals another two times, once with the Wings and once with the Ducks. How's that for a fun fact?

Easy fella!

I just mentioned that because the other dude was talking about the potential of a Babcock mid season firing ala St. Louis... could happen. Whatever happens, Babs has to win a round this season or he is gone...

I see. I'll admit expectations should be higher than a 1st round exit this season.

Also, as far as us running into injury problems (I think one of your earlier posts mentioned that being a possible hypothetical reason why we might have a bad year?), I think the biggest concern would be an injury to Andersen. I'm not even sure who our backup is at this point.

I really hope one of our young goalie prospects actually works out so we have a young goalie ready to step in when needed.
