Have you seen the comments on twitter. I'm downright embarrased by some of our fans yet feeling justified I dont do social media apps. I dont understand the logic. In what way would fans have spent the Marner money more wisely? By signing Myers and Simmonds instead?

If the issue is paying the money to a guy who was 11th in league scoring before even being in his prime, I'd say that's a good "problem" to have.

Pretty much. They obviously knew they would be right up against the cap and not have a whole lot of wiggle room. Hopefully teams like Ottawa, Detroit, LA, and a few others don't claim any of those guys during preseason though or that'll make it a bit more difficult.

But I'm sure if teams do claim any, the leafs will just sign a few more to one way deals and send them to the Marlies. There's definitely a few guys who could still be worth an add on free agency.

Ignore the loud minority. Vegas has Leafs as the 2nd best odds to win it all (behind TB). Sounds right to me.

With the forwards locked in it's actually pretty easy to forecast the cap room. They'll have about 12-13 million to lock up Dermott and add two other top 4 d'men.

I am not a troll. I am happy like everyone else that Mitch is signed. But I believe that defence wins championships. I like our defence this year. But after this year it looks like Barrie will walk and possibly Muzzin? Hopefully our young guys will be ready to step in by then...

Dermott is worth Werenski $$? He'd have to get healthy and blow us all away to be worth anything close to that. Most guys in his category seem to be about 2-3 Milly over 2 or 3 years.

So 10 Milly for a pair of top 4 guys.

He also got stupid bonus money that 2 thirds of the league would not have been able to offer him.

Marner is still my favourite leaf, but sometimes being the leafs sucks because the media make our players think they are the second coming of Gretzky. No way Marner gets this much if he put up the same production for Carolina.

I think it's a bit high for sure but I think he had a good argument that he's at least a bit better than Aho ...and the Leafs got that 6th year.

Aho at 6 years would have been somewhere between 9 and 9.5 AAV. I thought 10 would have been the ceiling on a 6 yr for MM but I think the new bosses may have promised to "repay" him those bonuses that Lou "robbed" him of. Who knows but it was a negotiating point.

Capfriendly has too many guys on their list because it's training camp.

Ben Harpur, for example, is listed as one of the 8 D. He's terrible and he makes the most out of all the filler defense. He should be gone. That's 725K saved.

They also have 13 forwards so if they send down Petan, Shore or Agostino, that's another 725K to 775K saved.

1.5 million, plus 10.5 from the Horton and Clarkson LTIR, that's 12 million total.

Plus the Dermott and Hyman LTIR savings, which are harder to calculate because we don't know how much time they will miss.

Definitely going to be a tightrope all season long. Luckily, the Marlies are down the road so calling guys up and sending them down will be quick and easy.

It’s a long season and neither Hyman or Dermott will be rushed back. They may also be out for an extended period if we need them to be because “they haven’t been clear by the Leafs’ medical staff.” There’s also the possibly of a trade or even someone else going on the LTIR before they return.

Leafs management have crunched all the numbers and run just about every scenario. If they’re not worried about it and then neither should we.
