Depends on the length of term.

If Rantanen signs for 6 years and 8.5 then yes I will probably yell at the universe.

With Point we have to expect that TB will get a lower number ...they always do. I read a good article that basically showed how and why TB players were taking about 15% less on their contracts. Players care about what they net and unfortunately for the us that's worked in their favour.

Point could do 6 x 9.25 and it'd net about the same as MM.

I get a little giddy looking at the leafs lineup on capfriendly

So many good young players signed long term and no boat anchors

- poopstash

That's the thing. Nobody is signed long term but the Stars of the team. Aside from Ceci, which they had to do to ditch Zaitsev, there are no bad contracts on the team.

Don't compare...just grab a beer and wait for puck drop.
- Woderwick

Exactly..

Enough dissecting everything and everyone. It reminds me a little of the latter a Burke years when we knew we were poop and everyone was miserable. But since the day they announced a rebuild, we’ve all been happy. Now that we have something so (frank)ing good that 5 years ago we could never imagine it, we have to ruin it by bickering about nonsense. Everyone’s signed, every need was addressed (minus toughness), everyone knows their role, the time is now.

Go Leafs Go.

Yeah Ceci surprised me but even still i’d sooner prefer one year of him over 5 years or whatever of zaitsev

I dont even mind Ceci. He was a needed RHD, could have a big change in his game with babs as coach and a fresh start. Most important is what you said. Its only one year that reserves 4.5 mill cap space for D that we need next year.

Apparently the Leafs are in the lowest possible rung of Cap Hell now. We have at worst 1 year of contention and, at best, 2 years before it all blows up.

Dubas, the guy who would never be able to sign BillNy/AM34/PaulMarner, has failed even more completely than ever before.

I love to dissect poop because it's interesting but don't mistake that as me not believing that this team is set up to kick some ass for the next decade.

I'm as optimistic as anyone ...

I agree. I'm not really putting this on Dubas. I just think the media pumping does change things.

I mentioned it before - but the Gardiner contract the media were yapping about was 7 mil on a long term deal. If the leafs had signed him for 6 mil, the media would have referred to it as a discount.

They pump our players relentlessly. I really do think it changes the players perception of their worth and makes negotiations more difficult.

- Leafs43

If Gardiner hadn't finished the year with a clearly bad back, I think he is commanding the $7m+ contract. The biggest surprise to me is that he signed 4 years.

Wishful thinking on the hater's part, nothing more.

Dubas and Co. have done phenomenal signing everyone who needs to be, unloading the garbage from previous management groups, has not been afraid to move on from decent players who leave a lot to be desired i.e. Gardiner, JvR, Bozak, Komarov and Hainsey etc., while making some tough decisions in order to move forward for the betterment of the team i.e. Kadri, Marleau (1st) and Brown/Zaitsev etc.

The team is in great hands and this management group will continue to get it done.

I had heard he had higher dollar amounts but shorter deals and he wanted the security.

I'm even gonna throw JT in this statement...this forward group is just getting started.

Key to any defensive shortfalls will hopefully be countered by puck possession - which is how this team has been built.

Something tells me he's broken. Most likely this simple - highest net $ deal he received was $16M regardless of term.

No I think Dubas paid him because he didn't want to (and couldn't) enter the season with an unsigned Marner.

If Rantanen and Point sign for less than 9 million cap hit, then will you consider the fact that maybe Marner got more than his comparables?

- Leafs43

Don’t know and don’t really care that much about comparables. For Dubas, MM and AM are central to this team. I’m sure they would have preferred to pay a bit less but they’re both locked up and the cap situation is manageable. Dubas’ reputation and job will depend on whether he’s right about what they can and will do.

(frank) yes! THIS. Every time someone mentions this it moves a little. Unless one of our stars poops the bed in a really big way we have absolutely no boat anchors going forward. At this point I don't think there's a single asset that couldn't be moved for a reasonable return.

..Aside form Ceci, like you say. But that's moot at the end of this season.

I was wondering about the same thing. If I had ended the year coming back from a back injury and then played like I had a back injury and teams were expressing concern about that very issue - I'd be inclined to sign a 1-year show-me deal to improve my value, and then sign the deal I'd been expected to.

He was definitely after term.
