They're desperate to hit final Wildcard spot...and they might just do it. The Pacific Division got poop real fast after being a nightmare. - AdamFrench
I agree they are desperate, but I can't see them in the top eight not even close IMO. Every team in the Central is probably better and probably only the Ducks and Kings are worse in the Pacific. Hard to say, I wouldn't put too much money on them making the playoffs this season or next. |

Nucks are on track to be a perennial 80-85 point mediocre team
Rags get a goalie and they are a consistent playoff team. |

poop..
Now I’m thinking about who the Leafs’ll lose... - Arctic_AARDVARK
They won't have to move protect Sandin or Lilly. Reilly will be protected.
Andersen will be a free agent, so he won't need protection, and I assume he won't even be kept as it'll hinge on the cap at that time. If he plays well he can ask for ~6.5m per, but his age will be a factor. I hope Scott and Woll come a long way in the next two years and make it an easy choice for TOR to manage Reilly's next deal.
Marner
Tavares
Matthews
Nylander
Johnsson
Kapanen
There's your 7 forwards.
I don't even know if we'll have enough Dmen to protect. Maybe we keep Muzzin. I doubt we can afford Barrie |

Gonna take 2 years until Henrik's 8.5M, Staal's 5.7M and Smith's 4.35M are gone.
Shatty's buyout cost also down from 6M to 1.4M.
Leafs better win a Cup before the 21/22 season. Rangers should be a strong contender from that season! |

There's a lot of time between now and the expansion draft but if the Leafs are truly stuck in a corner, they can always trade somebody like Johnsson or Kapanen for an ELC prospect and a scrub they can leave unprotected. They'll shed cap space, get a younger, cheaper replacement and have a token unprotected player.

Right which is why he played so much last year - burn
They did have Ozhiganov so he took up a lot of games himself.
I think they were grooming Holl because he was basically a rookie in the NHL too. Getting him practice time and preparing him. Obviously he needs to improve and have a good camp but everything about his profile is the type of guy Babcock wants. Maybe he really liked him but didn't want to rush him?
I don't think sandin or liligren make the team to start this year. Babs wants veterans, he wants the young guys to season in the minors.
If shmaltz has even an average camp I think he makes it base on age and past history with new assistant coach who is responsible for dmen. - burn
Dermott is going to miss about 12 games according to Babcock. That's the perfect amount of time to test Sandin and Liljegren without burning out their ELC.
Schmaltz is terrible. He's another guy who plays one-way hockey and can't play defense. There's a reason they got him for Borgman. He should be in the AHL all year.
Liligren plays regularly or goes back to the Marlies. Playing his in rotation makes no sense. - burn
Again, I was talking about the start of the season because Dermott is hurt, not a season long rotation. That being said, plenty of rookies have been used for 40ish games under Babcock before so if one of the young guys does make the team, don't expect them to play every game, the whole season either. |

Trading to manage the expansion draft hardly seems worth it. Just protect your important players and let the expansion team pick from the scrap pile.
I can't think of a trade that was a result of the expansion draft that worked out well for a team not named Vegas.

Either he or Matthews eventually gets moved. I just can't see Matthews staying beyond 5 years. I'm sure he likes playing here, but there's gotta be another franchise he dreamed of playing on for years.
And there's the issue of his shoulder. Does this guy stay healthy? |

Matthews needs shoulder surgery. I think if he doesn't have it he'll be perpetually injured moving forward.
Having said that, who cares if he eventually books it for the desert? McJesus will be coming home. Right? |
