Trading to manage the expansion draft hardly seems worth it. Just protect your important players and let the expansion team pick from the scrap pile.
I can't think of a trade that was a result of the expansion draft that worked out well for a team not named Vegas.

It depends on the situation but if the Leafs were stuck in a position where they would lose Johnsson, for example, for free, why not mitigate that and trade him to recover an asset instead?
