1 - FA vs RFA
2 - whole Center v wing
3 - he has not produced greatly away from the big guns
4 - Hayes is a responsible two way player, TK not so much, he tends to cheat
5 - just sign a damn bridge deal please - ClaudeFather
Those are all reasons why he isn't worth it. For sure that is going to be the team's argument. I'm just saying at the start, his agent is going to cherry pick all the good arguments for him. Easy for me to say as a nearing 40 balding guy with no hockey talent on a message board killing time at work, but if I had an agent, I'd always want them to go for the jugular. If they didn't start super high and then work down, I'd be upset.
5 is probably going to happen. It looks like these RFAs are getting squeezed quite a bit because no one really has any cap room. These guys really have no real options even for offer sheets. Although the cap number is nothing to sneeze at, you could even make somewhat of an argument that Marner got less than expected. |

Keeping in mind I have no idea what was offered, in negotiations you aim high yes but to be unreasonable is another thing. For example if TKs team was demanding a long term contract and wanted a high term, if i'm Fletch i'm hanging up the phone and saying call me back when you get realistic. From everything Fletcher has handed out, I highly doubt he is being unreasonable so I'm putting almost all of this on TK and his team, get real and sign a damn deal. |

I do as well. Him not being in town, I said before, he was anticipating this. Nylander last year to me was a turning point. A lot of other gm's wouldn't have folded. It is one of those weird times when brian burke was right. He said they made a mistake and paid him too much, he would've let him sit for a year.

You know those shows on NHL Network, 'A Day That Changed the Game' there was one on Lindros, there's gonna be a William Nylander one |

I don't mind players that bring the physical element. I know it is leaving the game, but to know you have a teammate that will stand toe to toe with anyone to me still provides security/confidence.
Example was our rookies game. Isles were throwing big hits and resulted in hesitation from some of ours.
last year when simmonds fought Oleksiak from the pens the tone completely changed. Pens were not as confident with the physical battles or mouthing off.
This is also why i think anderoff, gabriel or outside shot of stewart makes the team out of camp. - Peter Richards
Fighting might be leaving the game but I doubt the physical element is leaving the game. |

I'm just curious why you think it's absurd that his agent ask for this? If his hill is, he's never signing lower than 7-8 million, then ya I'm on your side. If your argument is he should never even started with an ask that high, I think it's a bit murkier.
I realize that center is a more valued position in the league, but when your big UFA signing has only eclipsed what you've posted in points the past couple seasons once in his career and has a cap number north of 7, then I don't blame the player's camp for starting that high.
I'm with you though that realistically, he's not getting anywhere close to that. - 2sticks1puck
You're changing your position now to a starting point in negotiations. It's September and camp has opened. Obviously the context of the conversation is what he is asking for NOW. He's not an 8M a year player.
You're also comparing an RFA to a UFA. |

Some guys will still be with their teams forever (like Giroux), but GMs will need to be more selective about who they lock up. Won't be able to get away with the Loui Erikssons and the Brent Seabrooks anymore. - Tomahawk
Boston have so many great contracts, but the Backes deal is really making things hard for them. |

I think at this point we can both agree that he is costing himself money by waiting in camp. It seems like this go around the RFAs are going to get burned by waiting for the most part.
I get that UFAs tend to get paid more now, but since I've always been on #teamplayer, I sure hope that changes in the future. |

besides Neuvy,
pre-season injuires...
Throughout the year every team will have injuries, better in the pre-season than regular season.
If Patrick is going full skate, you have to think he will be ok. If he has to take a few days off the ice after skating hard, then we should be concerned.
Frost, hate it for him but it probably cements he needs some AHL time. Not the injury on its own but it was the most likely outcome to begin with.... |

Just read that Frost pulled his groin and could be back on the ice as early as tomorrow (Rotoworld). |

McAvoy sign for 3 years 4.9 and they call it a steal...
is it?
I know Provy's and McAvoy's contract are different. Provy had 26 points and McAvoy had 25 points in less games last year (54).
The edge to Charlie on PPG, games played to Provy.
17-18 - 63 games for McAvoy 32 points
17-18 - 82 games 41 points for Provy, or use 16-17 at 82 games and 30 points.
McAvoy plays with Chara, Provy mainly with AMAC...
you can see the potential with McAvoy, if he can stay healthy for 82 games.
Looking at the contracts, both have their good and both have risk, is one a steal and one is not?
Detractors said we shouldn't pay Provy for his potential, are they paying McAvoy for his?
Opinions and input? |

Short term overpay for Provy. Long term...it'll be an underpay.
Werenski and McAvoy....after those contracts end in 3 years will be pushing for 10 mil a season. |
