Bettman was with the NBA in the 80's when they moved to a soft cap.

I like a Larry Bird type rule where teams can exceed the Cap by re-signing their own players.

- The Law

My only issue, is that teams that have internal caps will never get to use that rule.

What are the odds of a 5 million dollar playing like a 10 million dollar player? (1:2 ratio)

What are the odds of a 1 million dollar player playing like a 3 million dollar player? (1:3 ratio)

Think about that for a second. Now you can see why I’m overly excited the Leafs have themselves positioned for success for years to come.

Leafs will have some 700k-1million dollar players like Spezza who will be performing better than 700k player. Or someone they have in the lineup like Trevor Moore (he has 2 years left of 775k) Take a look at this year, remove a few high paid players (some we want, some we don't) and add in our top prospects + a quality UFA signing or two (cheaper) and those ~million dollar players will be performing/producing at what could be a 3+ million dollar player.

Leafs will have to be creative, but I think they will make the best of the situation due to who's on the team, where they are playing and who's coaching/running the show.

- Lucas.Neilson

So you're arguing that the top players will help the depth players perform better, and this will offset the insane cost to sign those players?

Small increase last year as well.
I dont see the new tv deal being a huge increase unless another broadcaster jumps into the bidding.
Bringing in seattle wont make huge strides for the cap either, only the owners pockets.

- Fakepartofme

He's right... TV deal, Seattle, and not to mention the new gambling structure that's legalized... cap will go up significantly (relative to the last two years) this will only help the leafs manage things...

Not worried at all about the cap, leafa are paying their best players big money... better than most teams stuck paying bottom feeders too much...

not a problem. i think benning will be using rousel's ltir space.

i am not sure if benning is aware of the fact the once rousel is healthy, he'll need rousel's ltir cap space back for rousel.

Boeser signing for 6 million? I have a difficult time believing it.

So the PA pushes the deadline about the CBA to today from yesterday. Like, how much are you on the fence you haven't announced it yet? Just tell the world.
- Aaron_85

i'm guessing they are trying to negotiate some concessions to the cba and revisions to escrow; in hopes of agreeing to terms on a slightly extend/revised cba today.

i suspect they don't announce anything until the last minute today. if they can't come to some agreement in principle on new terms today, then i would think they will be opting out.

don't they have more cap space if they send a couple guys down the minors?

exactly that.

I think you have a better chance scooping up / drafting someone to make 1 million and out perform their contract than you do a 5 million dollar player out performing their contract. The 5 mil underperform, the 1 mil over and voila you have your 3 million dollar player for 1 million. Especially when you are hand picking them for your club and you are looking for a specific fit.

Sorry but it's the truth. Leafs did their fair share of it too.

Teams basically do it right now anyway with LTIR, both rich and poor.

Players are annoyed by escrow so maybe the way to bridge that gap is to let some teams spend more money on players.

The players position on this is comical beyond belief.

Not really. They want the money they said they are owed on their contracts.

The owners position on what qualifies as hockey related revenue is equally comical.

Both sides play the game.

"I’m exactly where I want to be, in front of the greatest hockey fans in the world, proudly continuing the tradition with the @MapleLeafs. See you soon." -Marner

I am stoked for Marners return, and yes they are pretty solid fans, but what tradition does he speak of? What traditions have the leafs brought to the NHL in the last 50-60 years? 1st round exits? missing the playoffs? His media coaches should word his sound bites a bit better...

What tradition has Montreal had since 1993? 26 years of the same poop.

Does that negate everything great that came before it?

Funny thing about tradition is that it goes back 100+ years.

Yeah, so many players loved playing with Crosby to inflate their value.

I’m pretty sure Colby Armstrong scored 30 with him.
If you ever listen to spittin chicklets ryan Whitney is always thanking Crosby for his paycheck.

Great players are always going to make players around them better. The difficult thing will be deciphering who is a core piece and who they can get their value up and trade them for picks/prospects and bring the next guy in.

That wasnt my question silly.

Why do i care what tradition the habs bring? Habs players havent said what Marner said. I'm just wondering what tradition he speaks of. I mean the leafs are important because they are an orignal 6, but what tradtions have the team or its players brought? Simple question. What key moments or players have elevated the NHL in the league and around the world?

What made anyone outside of Ontario or around the world want to cheer for the leafs and marvel at their traditions?

Leaf player scoring the 72 winner would be one.

Henderson scores.

Can't think of a Hab one.

seems like this is the lever the nhlpa is trying to pull with their opt clause.

they want to increase the size of the pie. changing the 50% split seems non-negotiable.

would be a boon to the leafs if the definition of HRR was expanded to include more items.

To lazy to backroad at the moment.

But about those 2 offersheets Marner declined, I've been hearing it was Columbus and Minnesota

My apologies if this was already brought up!

Thats cool. I mean there were 2 leafs and 7 habs on that team including Dryden. Dont think Dryden was any good during that series. Henderson's goal was pretty amazing.

I am a habs fans, but love hockey and actaully really dont mind the leafs. My question can seem loaded but i just wanted to know what leafs fans take on their tradtion is. The tradition that Marner speaks of.

Right, I can only spitball. I'd just like to see something done not to punish good management teams.
- Aaron_85

There is no punishment for teams being well managed. If you draft and develop more talent than your salary cap can afford you are extremely rewarded in a number of ways:

1. Talented players to retain
2. Talented players to trade for other assets
3. Wins

Winning the lottery and drafting first isn't exactly a sign of managing a team well...it's more sucking and then getting lucky.
