I'm not gonna diminish how good it is for the Leafs to have 3 elite stars on the team for years to come. It's great news for them. Leafs are a very good team and you guys should be thrilled Marner finally signed.

But when you think that... let's say the (frank)ing bruins for example, are paying their 3 elite forwards around 20M and the Leafs are paying them over 30M......

Let's just say you guys aren't getting a bargain anywhere and it's bound to hurt at some point to fill other needs.

I hope they fail miserably.

With love of course.

Lots of talk about the Leafs 'polarizing' their roster and having to carry too many cheap players. There will be an impact but I don't think it's that big.

Leafs will be dressing 4 fwds, 2 defensemen, and a goalie that might play about 15 games all at one milly or less.

Tampa - 4 fwds, 1 dman;
Boston - 3 fwds;

The only real difference is that Boston and TB are able to invest more into their back up goalie and Boston has a bit more invested on the 3rd pairing D.

That could be meaningful but also should be an easy fix in February.

Zezel … talk reality much? lmao … gave away a couple of your top prospects to LA for a average defender in Muzzin, pretty sure he's given away 2 first rounders + to get out of bone head contracts and put the organization in cap Hell lol … wow
- Greene19

Guess again. The prospects and picks given up were insignificant, the cost of doing business for a stacked contender poised to dominate for the forseeable future. They don't have a cap problem, they have a championship opportunity.

Yeah yeah every FA is going to take a discount to play in TO. Just like Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Marleau, etc did. Of course everyone else will take less so others can have more. Unless Sandin and Liljgren are the next Dahlen and Heiskanen, this is the year and then window closed.

Or to put it correctly, the window is open for the better part of a decade.

Leafs have a sick top 6 locked up until 2023.
Have to hope the cap rises enough to keep one of Muzzin/Barrie.

Fill out the bottom 6 with Cheapos and prospects.

Sure but that's a little vague. Actually looking at the rosters where have they invested more? The current answer is backup goalie and 5th dman.

those player with (relative) high AAVs Toronto will keep.
others (Kapanen, Johnsson, Nylander, Kerfoot, one of Barrie / Muzzin) can always be traded if need to rebalance the team and/or need for additional capspace.

If Neuvirth makes the team, doesn't that mean we've upgraded the backup goalie spot?

If he makes the team, he'll also have to accept the contract he's offered at $700k, because we don't have more to offer.

And realistically back up goalies are a nickel per dozen at the TDL. Carry a 700k guy through Christmas then acquire some experience in January for what ...a 5th round pick.

Acquire an experienced dman in February to add to the mix. Probably not a Muzzin type this year but maybe a good 3rd pairing vet.

That's all part of the cap management plan.

Seattle and a new US TV deal will raise the cap in the next few years anyway. The small increase this year will not be the norm.

Small increase last year as well.
I dont see the new tv deal being a huge increase unless another broadcaster jumps into the bidding.
Bringing in seattle wont make huge strides for the cap either, only the owners pockets.
