I'm hoping they win the Cup, and I like their chances in a big way.

Small increase last year as well.
I dont see the new tv deal being a huge increase unless another broadcaster jumps into the bidding.
Bringing in seattle wont make huge strides for the cap either, only the owners pockets.

Sure it will.

The Bruins core is nearing the end and the Leafs are just getting started.

Getting started on what?? 5 UFA's on defense next year. As was always the case with the Leafs the past few years, they need defense, so unless you win it all this year, you will have to start all over again next year!! Your cap space is so tight you couldnt buy a popcorn at the Garden. Barrie's next contract will be 8+. Good luck fitting that under your Cap!!

Id expect a new franchise will increase the cap more then normal. New TV deals usually have a large impact on a leagues cap. The NHL will never be the NBA/MLB, but it should still see gains IMO.

And realistically back up goalies are a nickel per dozen at the TDL. Carry a 700k guy through Christmas then acquire some experience in January for what ...a 5th round pick.

Acquire an experienced dman in February to add to the mix. Probably not a Muzzin type this year but maybe a good 3rd pairing vet.

That's all part of the cap management plan.

- The Law

The Leafs are 15 million over the Cap now, forget about adding anymore players, even when you use the LTIR. You are so tight to the Cap you cant add another hot dog vender!!

Leafs have a sick top 6 locked up until 2023.
Have to hope the cap rises enough to keep one of Muzzin/Barrie.

Fill out the bottom 6 with Cheapos and prospects.

Fun times to be a Leafs fan

So chocolatey to see all the butt-hurtedness.
Leafs may never win another championship but it is enjoyable to know how many people are clearly consumed by fear that they might!

I'm saying it will go up more than the last couple of years. I don't know if it'll be a huge increase, but a few bigger bumps will be breathing room for the Leafs. Trolls are talking like the cap doesn't increase.

Seattle and a new US TV deal will raise the cap in the next few years anyway. The small increase this year will not be the norm.
- Zezel

That new TV deal is going to be substantially bigger than the current deal as well, I have heard 7 - 8 times bigger so that will be a huge shot in the arm for the cap.

The small increases are a deliberate attempt to reduce the escrow payments and normalize the revenue projections. It's likely the result of these efforts will lower escrow payments from 15% to about 8%.

But the idea was that it was a 2-year plan to lower the cap compared to the natural revenue progression and offset escrow. Last year the projected revenue increase was 4.2% and they reduced it to 2.5%. This year, it's considered to be something similar - a projected 5% reduced to 2.4%.

I believe I'd heard that the cap this year will be artificially held to 83.5, but that should be offset by 4%-5% growth in the subsequent years which would take the cap to 87/88 and 91.5/92.5.

I'm not sure that this new TV contract is the saviour everyone thinks it will be - hockey isn't basketball in the US - but let's hope it's significant enough to improve those numbers.

I do tend to agree with you, the CBA likely wont fix anything. I wish the players would fight a little bit. The NHL really would use a luxury tax opposed to a hard cap. Its better for everyone really.

That's very interesting, and would be great news for the Leafs.
