Small increase last year as well.
I dont see the new tv deal being a huge increase unless another broadcaster jumps into the bidding.
Bringing in seattle wont make huge strides for the cap either, only the owners pockets. - Fakepartofme

Id expect a new franchise will increase the cap more then normal. New TV deals usually have a large impact on a leagues cap. The NHL will never be the NBA/MLB, but it should still see gains IMO.

Leafs have a sick top 6 locked up until 2023.
Have to hope the cap rises enough to keep one of Muzzin/Barrie.
Fill out the bottom 6 with Cheapos and prospects.

So chocolatey to see all the butt-hurtedness.
Leafs may never win another championship but it is enjoyable to know how many people are clearly consumed by fear that they might! |

I'm saying it will go up more than the last couple of years. I don't know if it'll be a huge increase, but a few bigger bumps will be breathing room for the Leafs. Trolls are talking like the cap doesn't increase. |

In all seriousness, a long Leafs playoff run will increase the cap by itself. |

Seattle and a new US TV deal will raise the cap in the next few years anyway. The small increase this year will not be the norm. - Zezel
That new TV deal is going to be substantially bigger than the current deal as well, I have heard 7 - 8 times bigger so that will be a huge shot in the arm for the cap. |

The small increases are a deliberate attempt to reduce the escrow payments and normalize the revenue projections. It's likely the result of these efforts will lower escrow payments from 15% to about 8%.
But the idea was that it was a 2-year plan to lower the cap compared to the natural revenue progression and offset escrow. Last year the projected revenue increase was 4.2% and they reduced it to 2.5%. This year, it's considered to be something similar - a projected 5% reduced to 2.4%.
I believe I'd heard that the cap this year will be artificially held to 83.5, but that should be offset by 4%-5% growth in the subsequent years which would take the cap to 87/88 and 91.5/92.5.
I'm not sure that this new TV contract is the saviour everyone thinks it will be - hockey isn't basketball in the US - but let's hope it's significant enough to improve those numbers.

I do tend to agree with you, the CBA likely wont fix anything. I wish the players would fight a little bit. The NHL really would use a luxury tax opposed to a hard cap. Its better for everyone really. |

I hope so, but Rogers has lost a lot of money.. I'm hoping NBC and the NHL agree on a larger contract. |
