I'm not gonna diminish how good it is for the Leafs to have 3 elite stars on the team for years to come. It's great news for them. Leafs are a very good team and you guys should be thrilled Marner finally signed.
But when you think that... let's say the (frank)ing bruins for example, are paying their 3 elite forwards around 20M and the Leafs are paying them over 30M......
Let's just say you guys aren't getting a bargain anywhere and it's bound to hurt at some point to fill other needs.
I hope they fail miserably.
With love of course. - Scabeh
In fairness compare the age of the Bruins core and their key players. Yes McAvoy and Pasternak are young but Marchand, Bergeron, Chara, Krejci and Rask are in their 30s.

Here's the thing. If they don't win for 5 years,,,they STILL have the players. Re-tool, re-arrange, re-stack. You can get lucky, or unlucky. But you know you have these guys for this many years. Who knows...maybe Sandin becomes a number 1? Maybe soem random guy they pick 3 year from now is a superstar? Maybe they go into Cap Hell and shed quality for quantity. The Capitals followed the model of paying their guys up front and trusting the core and they eventually got it done with a team completely different when they began their "competitive phase." Same to Pittsburgh who kept cycling guys around their core. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's not next year or nothing though, that's short sighted. Boston almost won with the "core" of their last Cup + re-tools. They'd made huge changes, but the key longterm guys were still there. - AdamFrench
The lack of paragraphs makes me think this comes from someone else. |

I completely agree, Leafs have a brighter future than the Bruins in the current state of things.
My point was more about getting alot for your money. |

Meh.
Price is the mother (frank)ing best.
I learned to live with that deal.
But It's obviously no bargain either. - Scabeh
I'm gonna have to agree. Price, when healthy, is incredible.
Same with Weber. |

Small increase last year as well.
I dont see the new tv deal being a huge increase unless another broadcaster jumps into the bidding.
Bringing in seattle wont make huge strides for the cap either, only the owners pockets. - Fakepartofme
There was an article circulated this summer ...I think Forbes ...that said the 200 per year deal was, at minimum, expected to double. So, if true, that's 100 milly into the player/cap pool ....so an extra 3-4 milly per team as a 1 time bump.
Maybe nothing huge but every nickel is going to help the Leafs repeat as Cup champs in 2021. |

nothing wrong with the 'average in net statement'.
andersen isn't top10 (or maybe just make it as 9th/10th goalie in league, depending on the year)
backup goalie situation leafs are probably bottom 5 in league.
so that's quite average. |

Can't wait to see how Weber looks with a full summer of training instead of being injured.
Should be a big boost to the whole blueline. |

Good point, but to tell the truth .....................the whole truth
only one of those Bruins elite forwards is young - Bruins also have Krejci at $7.25M at age 33 and Backes at $6M at age 35
don't ge me wrong, Bruins have signed some nice contracts, but with Chara at 42, the rebuild can't be too far off - lots of older guys on that team - Leaf core is all in their 20's, majority in their early twenties.

Come on man the backup doesn't drag the goaltending down to average. Nobody playing the Leafs says good thing the goaltending is just average. Andersen stands on his head. |

You and JFJ and the other bagels who jumped down my neck the other day for saying Marner's agent would not stop leveraging an offer sheet just because the season started, and the leafs were not saving a million bucks because the threat was gone... Should have a peek through the tsn.ca headline article.
This is my favourite part:
"There were two presented to him in the summer, two opportunities which he declined and he told me 'Darren, I don't want to sign them, I want to be a Leaf,'" Ferris told First Up on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto on Monday. "So, we declined both of those opportunities and I know Kyle (Dubas) was aware of one them, the team had actually told him that they had made the overture to Mitch and there was a very strong likelihood there were more that would be presented once the season started as you know, the cap number gets set and makes it more difficult for a team to match."
So I dunno, maybe just don't be know it all Richards. - joel878
yes. i can see how mitch declining the offers was leverage against the leafs.
btw, i am moving to to bigger place. you mind dropping off the bedroom set i left in your head? i don't need that space in your head anymore. |

I mean, Grundstrom is a good prospect and I think will be a good NHL'er.
I don't like that he was a part of the trade. But I'm glad we got Muzzin. He was good last year and he'll be good again this year. - GreatGigInTheSky
I really liked Grundstrom |

The part about them receiving more offer sheets once the season started is the leverage you putz.
You can access your bedroom set from your mom's basement whenever you need, might not wanna be looking for my head on the way out though. |

I never thought nor think Andersen is a top goalie in the league.
Price, Gibson, Holtby, Bobrovsky, Vasilevskiy and a few others are better.
Andersen is in the Dubnyk category.
And I think backup goalie is a very very important position.

great. another celery cap expert.
that's a false statement. the way LTIR works, not it would not have made it harder for the leafs.
