Spezza signed for $700k; not a PTO.

Only a slight $700K difference.

C'mon Mike 'boy

I have 18 Leafs players at 80.75 mil for next season

This includes 10 forwards, 6 defensemen (Liljgren & Sandin) Barrie & Muzzy
total 14 mil to resign, Dermott at apprx. 2.0 - 2.5 mil & 2 goalies

That leaves 2-3 mil for a few (2-3)rookies/ vets for 4th line action at .700-1.00 per

Good to go - git 'er done!!!! Go Leafs Go

Meh. Some good. Some bad. See what tomorrow’s game brings but suspect some cuts after that

Mitchy with a couple good primary assists.

This new PP coach is a gem

Fire him, trade Marner and Matthews, buyout Tavares. It's over.

Yeah. Preseason is about the little things. You can really see how much better someone like Marner or Tavares are, or even guys like Duclair.

Gauthier looked like a guy who knows he's really in a fight for a job. He was good. Brooks looked pretty good. Marchment was decent. I thought Engvall would be overall better. While Timashov made some decent plays on the good side of centre, he's a tire fire on our side of the blue line.

Didn't think very much of Korshkov, to be honest.

The D is still pretty suspect. Schmaltz was slower than I thought he'd be. I thought Holl looked pretty decent.

Mike, yeah the Bruins cap looks pretty good because their core guys signed deals years ago; that's also why their core is in their thirties instead of just hitting their prime like the Leafs. The teams are in two different phases.

Essentially. I don't really care about the score, I just want to see the new guys and the kids and see what they got. It's only been one game, but as far as the 4C battle goes, point 1 for Goat. Spezza was not good.
Barrie looked pretty good.

That’s kinda how you know pre season is pretty Garbo.....

We’ve seen the Goat for 3 years. This game proves it’s only the first game of pre season.

Or do we all love the goat now? Until next game when he’s is inviable?

Can we trade Spezza to Free Agency for Boyle?

He's finished.

If he's not on the PP, he's pretty much worthless after the face-off.

And the Leafs got enough guys who can play the PP.

He's never been a good defensive player but it's not a coincidence he's been -10 or more many years in a row now.

The quality of competition is definitely a factor in the first 4 games. I think in the last couple of games when the rosters are getting trimmed, you can get a better sense of how well they fare against "levelled" competition.

The fact that Gauthier did look like one of the better players on either team is a positive - because it sort of insinuates that he may have progressed his game to a point where he's better than a typical AHL player.

That said, as I'd said earlier today, I don't think too much of Gauthier, but good for him having a good game. It would a good problem for us if he can maintain this level of play.

I'd let him have the preseason to get his legs under him and going before we pass judgement. He's 36, so it'll take longer.

I completely agree, though, he has never been good defensively.

His old't..may take him a couple months to get going.

Good guy though - great career. Gauthier with the advantage.

We know he's not good. But it's one game at a time for some of these guys vying for a spot.
If Goat plays better than Spezza consistently in preseason, he should have the 4th line c position to start the season. It doesn't mean anyone should expect him to be a 20+ goal scorer.

Yeah, this article was a pretty good troll job by Mikeinbasement.

It's like he read the comments from idiots a few days ago talking about this very thing and then ignored the reasonable responses, like what you just stated, and made an article.

Most of their core signed deals years ago, so their contracts look good now, and McAvoy signed a bridge deal, which means they'll need to resign him in a couple years to a higher amount. Like the Canucks, they got a lower cap hit now because they needed it, but will pay for it later.

I found Goat Boy to be improving at a consistent pace last year - a slow pace, but still thought he was getting better. Certainly not inviable.

Meh, first game. Everyone was awful tonight. Near the end of preseason we should have a better idea, no point judging based on tonight.

Marner coughed up the game winner.

Totally true Mike. The club is no better this year - about the same as last year - and next year they will boast an AHL defence, unless some big moves are made.

He signed for 4.9million per year though, which is a low number even on a bridge. Ceci almost makes as much money right now.

I think so too. He's slowly been groomed to be a 4C which was his max potential to begin with. It's bittersweet that he's as good as he is but also as good as he's realistically ever going to be.
