I was unaware that the study of hockey says faceoffs are irrelevant

And I dont think they should have moved AA, for what it's worth

- PatShart

I'm with you on keeping AA. The stat peeps say faceoffs are overrated - I've come around to their POV.

Roughly half the Bruins' line up consists.of NHL.players while our line up actually could be opening night

It appears both Nylander and Wedin perform well enough to make the roster. Guess if another cut might be Wedin. But he'll get NHL time this season one way or another. Kubalik is almost a lock.

DeHahn reolaces Koekkoek when everyone is healthy.

- jhawk59

Wedin is making a good case for himself. Nothing real flashy, but hard work and no dumb mistakes.

Disappointing performance.

But honestly it’s completely meaningless and as long as we don’t suffer any injuries then I’ll be happy.

I don't know Providence played for 60 minutes, Boston has a great system. Hawks only gave up 1 goal

Still fun to watch Toews and Kane. They (and Keith) represent the Golden Age of Blackhawks hockey. We are lucky people.

I thought the Hawks had the better opportunities tonight.

The 3rd line is interesting, Kubalik looks like he's going to be a pain in the ass to play against

6 and 7 looked good tonight
Keith looks good
Murphy needs a better partner actually so does Keith

So were none of the guys sent to Rockford (or scratched tonight) really not better than Dahlstrom or KK?

Seems to me that JC has enough players to use playing time and roster spots as a hammer. That's a good thing, imo. What he does with it, we will see. Maybe he'll make scottak look like a genius for doubting him. Maybe not.

Yeah, I get that is a factor. And, I guess if you're not 100% convinced of one of those players' superiority, then not worth the risk. Guess will see what happens when deHaan returns.

I'm in agreement, though, that the players you cited are not too exciting.

From a 4th line C?

Possession, puck retrieval, defensive responsibility.

If you’re getting a lot of hits, it likely means you’re chasing the puck around a lot. You can’t record a hit when you have the puck.

Fun Fact: Of the top ten teams in hits last season, 5 missed the playoffs, and 3 were first round exits.

Last season roughly 10% separated the best faceoff team in the league from the worst. 10%. Winning or losing 10 more faceoffs out of every 100 taken is not going to make, or break any team. It’s just not that important. What’s more important is the ability of a team to regain possession after a lost faceoff/turnover/dump in etc. That is Kampf’s biggest strength, and is exactly what you want out of a 4th liner.

- Ogilthorpe2

I'd also add to this--- and avoiding stupid selfish penalties. Actually that's a bit redundant -as selfish penalties are never not stupid.

I can't wait for Boqvist to take Gus's spot, i forget how much he sucks until i start watching games again
- BetweenTheDots

So Boqvist, a "green" rookie, is. going to be better defensively than Gus? They both will have.the same weakness.

Remains to be sern in this new system ONCE TEAM GETS ACCLIMATED.WELL TO IT if Gus or Boqvist would benefit defensively from the system as well as forwards helping out more.

Boqvist is already better than Gus, it's going to be difficult for JC to send him to Rockford watching Gus try to be a defenseman.

You mean like playing the 2 on 1 - by going for the puck carrier -which is something that coaches teach under 10's ???

It's pretty tough to beat that, defensively...

Good morning Hawks fans. Hawks win . Last night we saw a couple of young promising forwards step up and I believe solidify or make a argument to keep them on the team.

Nylander for all the negative comments when he was acquired, he has been showing a lot off skill , a work ethic . Nylander Toews Kane just need more time together but right now the formula is working. Nylander showed his skill last night with that slick move that created a scoring chance.

Kubalick looks like a great sneaky pickup and a lock to make the team.
Debrincat looks quiet out their from my observation ?

Wedin,,,I thought played well and didn't do anything negative and it was his play that created the opportunity which lead to a goal.

The defense I'm still curious why it's so hard for them to have a system in place and make clean passes and exit the zone.
17 shots given up is a recipe for disaster.

Lehner looked rock solid ..

Did anyone notice last night early in the 1st period the hip check murphy tried and failed ?

It's been 30+ years since I played. Then, as now, the hip check is one of the most difficult things to do successfully in hockey.
Hopefully, it's just a preseason thing he tried.

While I won't dispute that doing a hip check isn't easy, but murphy isn't a 19 year old kid still developing. He has been around and my point is many defenseman have tried , practiced that technique, murphy if he plans to use that technique in a game he should have it perfected or be more aware of the cost if not executed properly.

He tried and failed miserably last night allowing the skater to blow right past him creating a scoring chance.
I'm all for playing tough , but I want the defenseman to play within their means , 17 shots in the 2nd period from their rookies against our starters is a bit alarming.

Lehner IMO was the reason Chicago was always in the game standing solid in net when the team was outshot / played .

I know it's preseason and the games don't count , but the season starts in 2 weeks and Chicago has just a few more games to build upon and start clicking on all cylinders

Faceoffs are as overrated as Ogi's lamb shank.
- mohel

Except, I think, the first one of a PP or (especially) a PK - where possession is more important and less fluid.

I don't think Colliton's system has been fully implemented yet, after only a handful of practices with 30-40 players in camp. It's probably going to take some time after the roster finally cut down to 22/23 players and those players spend time learning and practicing the system. It is probably something that will provide better results as the players go from thinking about how to play to instinctual playing. As fans, we must stay patient and realize giving up 39 shots against an AHL squad is not indicative of the final product - it is indicative the final product is still a work in progress and will be for some time. The objective is to get better over time - not look for an immediate fix as if flipping a switch is all that's needed.

The Hawks looked very sloppy last night in their own end - a lot of chasing the puck. It's not a big deal and it won't be a big deal unless it continues to happen well into the season.
