We were on the volleyball court last night, so I didn't get to see the game. But my extra set of eyes said Geno looked solid, and Petts was a +3. She also confirmed a couple things you saw, particularly the young D. Sounds good to me for preseason.

Pettersson looked solid for someone that will be a Top 4 D now. Schultz was good too. Malkin was very good despite only getting one point. Nice all around effort.

I see Lafferty, A.Johnson getting a lot of call ups if someone goes down. Poulin and Légaré look legit and should be up in 2-3 years max.

Joseph showed awesome passing getting out of our zone and good skating as well as Marino.

We have options moving forward and this is wonderful.

That said I could see us moving on from Rust, Aston-Reese and Schultz in the next couple years for cap purposes. Kahun and Simon are in check as well.

I could see us moving on from pretty much anyone other than Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Letang, Dumoulin, and Murray next year for cap purposes. Probably not Pettersson either just because we have so few LD options. Anyone else who makes money could be a casualty, and there will be several.

I don't think the situation is all that bad next year. We'll have $10.4M from Galch and Schultz alone and only Murray, Petts, Riikola, McCann, Kahun and Simon to re-sign. Of course, Murray and Petts could take up all of that, but I don't see the rest getting much more than they are making now, maybe Simon. The question is whether we'll have ELCs come through to fill out the lineup as others take the Galch and Schultz roster spots (I'm not expecting us to re-sign either Galch or Schultz).

If we can figure out a way to unload just one bloated contract (JJ, Guds, or Tanev), I think we're golden. If push comes to shove and we can't get rid of any of those or we need more space, Bjug and Rust are always easy trade options to free up space.
