gonna be a riot if they don't - both he and Zuke will be well taken care of!

Girardi is one of those guys that would never have his sweater retired, but for what he did and meant for this team no one should wear that number. Dude was the warrior and not many could fill his devotion and work ethic

A fan vote would possibly retire his # before most others...!

I was watching whatever the general ESPN pregame show is called a week or two ago (gameday? I don't know, I don't give a poop about college football) and some kid in the background had a sign that said "NEED MONEY FOR BOOKS" and then he drew the Venmo app icon and his username

edit: Guess there was one for beer money too

Marc Staal said he spoke to Dan Girardi last week, that he's at peace with his decision to retire and excited about what comes next. "Now he gets to carry on with the rest of the life and not take slap shots in the ankles anymore, so I'm sure he's looking forward to that.”

they retired about 4 thousand guys from the 1972 Rangers and they only made it to one final

I think Girardi is a good candidate to have number retired

I think it'll be close. I wouldn't be mad either way. I still think that only Hank from those teams has their number retired. I also wouldn't be surprised if they were more willing to retire Staal's number considering he probably is a Ranger for his whole career.

I think his jersey should be retired. Heart-and-soul Ranger from start to finish. And he would have been a Ranger for his whole career if some GM didn't have a boner for that "other guy" that was recently bought out.

I think it would be cool if they did. Guy was really the heart of the Rangers for over a decade.

I'm not disagreeing on the retired number thing but Girardi was bought out. I'm not sure I see his number retired. Maybe down the road if a better number 5 comes along and they lump them together.

As for Zuccarello, not a chance. One of my favorites but he doesn't check any of the boxes for a retired number.

Yeesh, the only Ranger I think that deserves his number retired that's been on the team in the last 15 years or so is Lundqvist. To me, "fan-favorite" is a dumb reason to retire a jersey.

Heres my thing about retired jerseys from a team perspective. Does it always have to be about the numbers? Think thats kind of bogus.

Every once in a while you get players that mean so much to the team and they might not have the offensive numbers, but their presence on the team is probably way more important than any statistical numbers

well Zuccarello isn't retiring from the NHL for a very long time yet, so it's pretty much a moot point

Minnesota is going to be one old team boy, that Spurgeon contract was nuts, they already have Parise and Suter forever, their goalies are old

in a league where every single team seems to be trying to get younger, the Wild are picking a bold strategy

It would be nice to put a Girardi banner up, that's a good idea without retiring the number. Just a guy who meant a whole lot to that era.

The Wild are the most mediocre team to ever be mediocre. Never bad enough to get a high pick but a perpetual playoff-bubble team with no real shot of ever advancing. I think they are probably in the top 3-5 least interesting teams in the league.
