The answer was buying him out. Very modest hit for this season and the two after that. Basically the remainder of the window was manageable. Didn't need to lose prospects or high picks. Just admit failure and eat that bitter pill.....and don't do something that stupid again.

We all agreed the term of JJ’s contract was terrible the moment he signed it. I could’ve lived with a 2 year prove me deal but not a 5 year deal the way it was given. This coming from someone who supported the signing of the player but NOT the term.

Especially for a guy on the wrong side of 30 and in decline.

I didn't know much about him prior to the signing, but my impression was that he was a pain in the ass to play against. It seems as though he has gotten soff since coming to the Pens, in addition to being bad at hockey.

3 mil for a top six winger? Yeah terrible.

Ha! So one "decent" season of 29 points at the age of 27 is now the criteria for top six? And it's $3.5M for 6 years with a M-NTC. He's a glorified 4th liner. He has never been top six in his career and there's the very real possibility that his point totals last year were an outlier rather than the norm. This is coming from someone who likes his style of play and likes him as a player. That contract is ridiculous on so many levels, though, especially on the heels of the JJ fiasco.

You know, after watching these pre-season games, I couldn't help but think, "I'll bet there's a Tanev among these players who is probably just about as good (or close enough) and would cost league minimum-ish on an ELC."

Omg it’s 3.5 for 6???? Hahaha. You (frank)ing girls on here freaking out about contracts. It really is comical. And every GM wants to go into a season just hoping players at training camp fill out their roster. Those young players are also a bunch of wussys. Rosters spots maybe available and no one drops the gloves. Weak, soft, bullpoop. Send them all down.

Hey guys check out this video about Samuel Poulin. It’s pretty complete. The guy talks about Nathan Légaré a bit too:

Grindaaa, that's definitely the way to go for a roster spot... i mean, Domi had a pretty good year after his preseason fight last year!

Meh... A little too much money for entirely too long, but Tanev is still a decent player and he's only 27. He'll play competent minutes in the bottom 6 for most of that term.

JJ on the other hand sucked before he got here and he was already 31. Neither are good contracts, but JJ's deal was plain stupid.

Just saw the JJ own goal hahaha...how in the (frank) could they even justify having him on opening night roster?

I havent seen as much pre season play as some of you but I'm noticing sprinklings of positive Rikky talk...

I could see #50 and #44 together to start the year, no doubt. Jacko will start on the bench.
