I'm going by usage in pre-season and public statements from management. You can continue to focus on one-way contract status if you like. But it didn't help Lyon or Andreoff who both got waived before other guys on two-way deals who play the same position.

The statements on Friedman came during development camp and were in response to being specifically asked about the player. They predate the signing of Welinski. Again, at the start of camp, Chuck put out Welinski's name as guy in blue line mix in camp. Didn't do so for Friedman.

As for preseason usage, again, Welinski was with Morin (a roster candidate) at the start of camp and preseason opener. Friedman was with Wotherspoon (a roster longshot at most) and was moved up after Welinski got injured.

Friedman did have a good camp and he did take big strides last season, enough that he got rewarded with a callup for the final game of the NHL season. He is a recall candidate for this coming season. He did NOT enter camp ahead of Welinski on the depth chart but that's a fluid thing.

No one at the start of the 84 camp expected Rick Tocchet or Derrick Smith to make the team. I don’t see anyone that reminds me of Tocchet, but I see some of Smith in Twarynski

I don't even know if they confirmed what game it happened in tbh. But to go through the entire summer and still be week to week is pretty concerning to me.

I think it's far more likely that they don't have a definitive answer on his status than it being some far fetched conspiracy of trying to keep it a big secret.

I don't know what you mean by "fair". As Bill said, Morin hasn't been impressive in camp.They're trying to put together the best team they can. Why would they not want him to succeed? He needs to earn his spot and he hasn't. You could play Provorov or Sanheim with any of those guys and you would still see their talent and ability. Morin seems like a great guy and no one can deny his dedication and work ethic, but it sounds like he just hasn't been good enough. It sucks. The injuries have really derailed his career. I dont know if he'll have an NHL career. Maybe he will. Unfortunately for him, right now he has not earned a spot ahead of Haag or Myers.

All I’m saying is, if they don’t play Hägg, Morin, etc. for a stretch with the top 4 locks, then how can you say they haven’t earned a spot? I’d like to see Morin and Hägg get some extended looks. Nothing more. Then, they can make one of them go away. Myers hasn’t exactly been great this preseason either. However, he has received extended ice time. This is my observation. With everyone learning a new system this year, the vets needed additional time, and that has kept ice time at a minimum for the young guys.
