Not sure what everyone is so shocked about. We all love Lehner and what He did last year. That said with all the stuff going on in his life that he is currently doing a very good job keeping in check... You can't give that guy a 4 year contract. .. CAN'T
They offered him 2 years.. said it was best offer... and they hung up the phone.
Once that happened it allowed the Isles coaches to get "their guy" in Varlamov. They did the right thing by the offer.. but make no mistake.. these goalie coaches wanted Varly. - niteislander
I thought the two year deal was more than fair. Robin should have taken it especially with the Isles taking a chance on him and helping him have a fine year. |

Well, the surprise for me is Lou saying he really wanted Lehner back, and the whole thing maybe coming down to a communication breakdown somewhere. My read on the situation had always been pretty much your last point...that they always wanted Varlamov, and the offer to Lehner, with a hasty take-it-or-leave-it deadline, was just a step they felt they had to take given what he accomplished last year. |

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but to me it really seems like they had concerns about Lehner relapsing and that's why they didn't want to commit a multi-year term to him. Understandable.....but also kinda shi tty |

Lamoriello: Ho-Sang's rep asked for a trade, so we told him not to report for a few days while we worked on that. |

Ho-Sang's rep realizes no one wanted him for free, right?
edit -- but, yeah, I'm sure this extra dash of Ho-Sang drama will really make all the other teams reconsider |

As someone who has some knowledge of people with addictions the odds are unfortunately stacked against him. It sounds like he has completed a year of sobriety and that is fantastic for him and his family (His odds are now better than 50% he will continue), but you can't give a person dealing with those issues a 4 year deal. I was shocked they offered him 2 frankly. He will be battling his demons every single day for the rest of his life..and I will pray for him and his family to keep them in check. .... but if the Isles signed him long term it would have been complete idiocy.
these are the odds that I am sure they looked into during this process. https://crehab.org/relaps...lapsing-once-in-recovery/ Lehner is a GREAT story, but they are still running a business. They gave him a 1 year deal when no one wanted him back. He and his agent should have signed the 2 year deal immediately. Everyone of the writers who are kinda shaming the Isles for not resigning him would have been the first to crush them if it went south in the first year or 2......"well they knew what he was dealing with when they offered him that long contract..etc."

The crappiest part is you know every trade conversation is going to go like this:
"Gee, I don't know, Lou...'future considerations' is an awfully steep asking price for Ho-Sang..."
and this saga will march on through the season. |

I don't think so. I'm not sure anyone cares anymore. I highly doubt he will get called up even for injury. Ho-Sang will need to face reality. |

I wished we got this Lou when negotiating with Leo and Hickey. Even Varlamov at 4 years is tough. |

They could always just tell him that they're unable to find a suitable trade partner and he's expected to report to the AHL. If he doesn't and he decides to sign overseas, I'm pretty sure they can just qualify him when his contract runs out and he remains Isles property. They really don't have to do anything with him. |

I think Varlamov is fodder for the Seattle expansion draft in two years. Obviously a lot can change between now and then, but he's gotta be towards the top of the list for goaltenders for them, as of right now. I'd say one of Varly/Ladd/Boychuk ends up in Seattle. |

If Sorkin comes over and plays well, Varlamov's contract is all good. I really hope Ladd is taken by Seattle. |

He's an afterthought at this point. If clearing waivers didn't wake him up then he's beyond hope. |

Maybe, but maybe Lou is working out a deal for him and they're just keeping him off the ice as a precaution. - eichiefs9
Why would anyone do that when they coulda had him for free? I think he's pouting and wants outta here. |

Because if you claimed him you had to keep him on your roster for opening night which means you would have to waive somebody to make room and if the team wants him but wants him to go to the minors they would be short a guy on the opening night roster. If you trade for him you can just send him to the AHL if you want as long as he clears waivers which shouldn’t be a problem |

He doesn't need waivers again if he's traded. He can report directly to anyone's AHL team. If he was claimed he would've had to pass through waivers again to be sent down.

LOL You took the words right out of my mouth. I watched the kid in juniors, he wasnt anything special. He was a poor pick. I really didnt see anything from him that justified his drafting position. Honestly I dont understand what he expects, he cleared waivers, does he think people didnt take him because they wanted to give up pieces for him?

Even so, thats counter productive to what HoSang wants isnt it? He thinks he is NHL ready. He doesnt want to be in the AHL |

I'm sure most guys in the AHL don't want to be in the AHL. Unfortunately for Josh he's not special and is going to have to prove himself to any NHL team before they just hand him the keys to a full-time top-six RW job
edit: I think at this point he's just looking for a fresh start somewhere. I think he's fed up with the Islanders and I have to imagine that's starting to become a mutual-feeling. Ima just sit over her and hope for a deal for Jesse Poolparty. Isles have a surplus of good-but-not-spectacular defense prospects that are close to being ready to play in the NHL, maybe Ho Sang and one of them for Jesse. Probably not. |

Looks like Holmstrom is staying, he got a number in BPT
Too bad Ho Sang might not stick around, BPT is going to be real strong this year |
