He can win face-offs but other than that, he's clueless on the defensive side of the puck and that's the primary job of the 4th line center.
He's basically a 700K face-off winning instructor for the Leafs. |

Hopefully Babcock jerks him around for two weeks and Spezza goes to the Leafs and they mutually decide to go separate ways and he ends up in Ottawa where he belongs. |

It's possible Spezza had a bad camp and just doesn't seem ready. Maybe if he wasn't a vet he would have been sent down, who knows, it's all speculation.
Players are not only judged in games but practice as well, and we don't really know how he's looking as a PKer, I think we can take Babcock at face value until more info is revealed.
I do trust that Babcock wants to win and will put out the lineup he believes will have the best chance to do so. Whether or not he's right will be proven with the outcome of the game.

Bottom line - the way Spezza performed at camp, he doesn't deserve to be dressed tonight. He didn't earn jack poop. He played like crap. He was told early on that he was going to have to earn his spot. He didn't earn his spot, but he's on the roster with a chance to pick up his game and show that he belongs here.
What's that newer axiom? "This isn't the Try Hard League, this is the Get It Done league"?
Spezza hasn't done either in a Toronto jersey. Hopefully the message has been received. |
