with all the injuries and roster surprises, what does the 2nd PP unit look like now?

Andy Welinski's injury is the reason Myers isn't on the opening roster. On INR, the Flyers have his $750K cap hit on their cap, which means that Myers would put the team over the cap even though he's making the NHL minimum this year.
- bmeltzer

And this, folks, is why you don't spend completely to the cap.

Wouldn't it be nice to have your best players available for game 1?

This is true, but the Dave Scott Flyers are about maximizing their resources. From a business perspective, it’s a great success.

I agree overall, but at this point if we had cap space, I think Stewart would’ve been signed.. So maybe it’s a blessing in disguise for now

Hard to believe they blew through 33.5M in cap space this offseason and you end up with Myers being sent down, paper transaction or not, and they didn't sign a "star" player

While I think it’s crazy to assume a full season of Hart makes us better, or the very idea of Morin being better than Hagg, I think I would play Morin over Hagg in game one. Not because I buy into Morin being better but because you can’t teach size and Morin might be slight better with the puck. I am hoping however that Morin and Hagg split time like Gudas and Schenn did the season we traded Luke Schenn.

Also, the top PP unit needs to simple have Voracek and Giroux switch sides. It’s ridiculous that it hasn’t happened yet.

As for our goaltending. I have a much higher expectation than last season but Monday wasn’t a good showing for Hart. Great rookies have struggled with the Sophomore jinx. The league has a better idea of who Carter Hart is now. It’s along season. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. He’s still young and Elliott is still Elliott.

I wouldn't put too much stock into that performance. Prior to that he was dominant in preseason.

Really? Why is this crazy to assume? Instead of 8 goalies, barring injury, you have 2 main ones. Net stability, better talent (i think you would be crazy to say that Hart, talent alone, is not better than the gaggle of goalies we have had under our employ the last few years), and with this comes more confidence from the players in front of the goalie. This has been said ad naseum by players after they have left the game so to not throw their current goalies under the bus, that it is much less stressful to play when you know you don't have to be perfect and if one goal is scored than you know the game is basically over.

And the argument of the league has a better idea who Carter Hart is now, the league has a pretty good idea of who Rask is, who Price is, who Vaslievsky is, etc etc etc. Im not saying Hart is or will be any of them, but the cream always rises. That argument is tired.

After using 8 goalies last season, many of who are at best AHL caliber, you think its crazy to assume a full season of Hart makes us better?

Jeez, I think even 2Real and Plind would agree that it makes us better.

unfortunately. the first unit was horrible last year in regard to how successful they used to be, does it make sense to split the first unit up? Also G on the far wall on his natural side sucks, i dont understand the benefit. having him on the near wall on his off side allows him to open up and see the ice. makes no sense to me.

Even a minor set back, at least having a better defense in front of him will make up for a "sophomore slump".

That 'slight overpay' for Hayes doesn't seem so harmless anymore.

(Oddly, it's about the exact same amount they would have needed to keep Myers up)

Except it isnt that big of a deal. Myers will be up soon. The problem is having 8 Dmen. It is only a matter of time before Hagg is dealt and that will give us that wiggle room. The team improved on paper regardless.

At the end of they day a lot of space is available next season. Gudas, AMac, Schlemko Braun are all off the books which comes out to 6 mill. Maybe we move on from Raffl as well and free up another 1.6 mill.

Instead, they should have taken Brind'Amour -- whom Quebec asked for repeatedly -- off their untouchable list, and included Butsayev instead of the compromise component of Ricci & Forsberg (Forsberg was a prerequisite if Quebec was to back off the insistence on Brind'Amour and accept Ricci instead).

In our fantasy redo of history, let's say the Flyers take Jagr instead of Ricci, still do the Lindros trade (but with Brind'Amour and Butsayev in the package), and still did the Recchi trade to Montreal in '95 for Desjardins, Recchi and Dionne.

The top six up front:

LeClair - Lindros - Jagr
??? -- Forsberg - Renberg

- bmeltzer

In a fantasy redo of history... There are two things that I would do - rewrite the events of what happened on Nov 11, 1985 and July 23, 1999.
