If Lyon goes down -- or, at NHL level, if Elliott goes down -- then suddenly the Berube signing makes a lot more sense. It's a depth insurance policy; no more and no less.

Re: Sandström, yes, the SHL is a better league than the ECHL that is perhaps a slight shade below AHL. However, that cuts both ways -- it also means that the play in front of the goalie isn't as good, so he'll see a higher volume of chances. As Scott Gordon said on Sept. 11, from a goalie's perspective, shots are shots and minutes are minutes.

The apparent plan for Sandström is to move him and down as needed, as his play and available AHL playing time dictate. The focus for now is on getting him as much work as possibile, whether it's with the Royals or the Phantoms.

I guess. The Berube signing still seems like overkill to me. If you need a generic AHL quality goalie at some point during the season, you can usually go out and get one.

Oh well, is what it is.

Elliot should play the following games in November

10/2 TML
10/9 @TML
10/19 @Ott
One of 10/23 or 10/25 CAL or VAN
10/29 DET
This is only five. Elliot will probably one or two others of the 16 total for the month.

I want Hart to play all division games if possible. I would like to see him play most of the EC games.

So you want to see Austen Matthews break Wayne Gretzky's career scoring record by the end of the first period?

Hart could play that game and Elliot could play the @BOS game the next night. Whatever works.

Hexy stood pat with Elliott and Neuvy knowing they both had injury issues....and it came back to bite him.

I think Fletch seen that and prepared a backup plan in case Elliott got hurt again. Enter Berube...who has more NHL experience than anyone else not named Elliott.

I won't cheer for injuries, even for a team or player I cant stand, but Pens announced both Malkin and Bjugstad are out "long-term"

Even more important now to have a hot start.

Saw that. Pitt and cbj might be cooked this year, and nj looks like they can't keep the puck out of their net. Would be great to start solid as you say.

I would have stashed Berube in the ECHL and had Sandstrom backing up Lyon.

Sounds like the Malkin injury could be pretty bad as they were talking in terms of "it shouldn't be a season ending inury" which implies it's worse than day to day or week to week even.

To be honest...I would too. But...that's the route they're going.

Sandstrom looked really good in the rookie game.

Can you do it contractually? Meaning, does Berube contract allows for demotion?

Berube would have to approve a move to ECHL. Which he likely wouldn't. If he had been told ahead of signing that was the plan he would have said, "No thanks. I will look elsewhere."
If you try to force it on him AFTER telling him that he's going to be an NHL depth option and will be with the Phantoms then you are not only being dishonest with your player but also are compromising your ability for future signings.
Berube didn't sign with the Flyers to be forced into agreeing to go to Reading. And the Flyers did not sign him as a veteran goalie depth-option with the intent to stash him in the ECHL.
Just not a realistic nor necessary option imo.

If they like Berube that much, they should have got rid of Lyon.

Let’s face it, if Hart, Elliott, Berube and Sandstrom were then all to go down with injuries, they’re (frank)ed anyway.

Well, then again, if Hart goes down that would be pretty much be that, regardless of what other fading vets, career minor leaguers or untested prospects are on their goalie carousel

The fans wouldn't criticize team for not having goaltender depth?

I wonder what the plan is with Lyon. I mean, he played OKAY at the NHL level, but I actually thought that Stolarz showed more...but that's another story. Either way, I don't see Lyon as anything more than a career AHLer who can be called up for a spell in case of injury. The organization may see more in him, but he just seems like a run-of-the-mill AHL goalie, to me.

Just want to point out that, last night, the Lightning failed to record a shot on goal during the entire second period against the Hurricanes.

The Canes were my preseason pick to win the division, as long as their goaltending holds up.

The Swedish league Sandstrom played in last season is a higher quality league than the ECHL. The signing of Berube made no sense. Lyon/Sandstrom should be the tandem in LHV with Ustimenko getting his start at Reading.

It’s so interesting to look at comments from a point in the past and then see how they turn out down the road. For instance, I heard this same thing said of another goalie this time last year. Jordan Binnington is a run-of-the-mill AHL level goaltender. Funny how time flies. If someone had ask me, who had more potential Binnington or Lyon? I would have said Lyon all day, every day.

We’ll see, but I support the depth move all the way.
