3...game...sample...size......

....almost...half...of....the ....forward.... group.... is... missing....

I wasn't writing him off. I'm simply pointing out it's good they didn't long-term commit in case they were wrong.

I'm also not against keeping Pettersson if he proved to be a good 3rd pairing dman, but that would cost them half of the projected price of him being a 2nd pairing dman.

I can only imagine the reaction being only three games in if they signed him long-term to a $3M deal. People's heads would be exploding.

I gotta be honest, I don't want them to trade Guddy at this point. I think they're fuking up by not having Marino play games in the AHL. Wouldn't it be much easier to evaluate him playing 20 minutes down there than getting an odd game up here with spot shifts? Marino was great in the preseason, but I remember another player who looked great in the preseason (DP) and he sucked when the real games started. Let him develop. Let him get big minutes. Putting Marino behind this MASH group of forwards has disaster written all over it.

Some of these decisions make very little sense to me. I'm trying to stay in the Sully/JR camp, but they're making it tough.

- madmike71

I pretty much agree with this. While he's grossly overpriced, Gudbranson is doing his job at an acceptable level for his role.

Marino has looked solid, but he's clearly a step behind and would benefit from a year in the AHL or at least a good half of a season.

Now, I'd be fine if they moved Guds and could bring in a proven 3rd pairing RD for an appropriate price, but that seems like a hard thing to swing.

Yeah for sure...but the flip side of that is if he ends up having a stellar season and he costs more to extend.

I believe we'll get some space with players like Malkin and Galchenyuk on the LTIR. This helps a bit. Fact is we need to shed some salary.
- Barnaby36

Galchenyuk didn't go to LTIR though, I thought it was just IR?

But yes, we need to move salary and right now we are too beat up to do so at forward. We will probably have to part with a nice pick or prospect to do so. Which is becoming an alarming trend.

I really like Marino's game a lot. I think he is more than ready for regular NHL minutes. I think at this point he is superior to Johnson, Rikkola, Ruwhedle and Trotman.

Here's what I'd be looking to do if I were the Pens...

TO OTT: Jack Johnson, Dominic Kahun + 2nd in 2021 (This third part is open to ideas)
TO PIT: Vladislav Namestnikov (He's a rental and no guarantee he would want to re-sign with OTT)

TO LA: ZAR + 3rd in 2020
TO PIT: Tyler Toffoli (50% retained)

I KNOW MY PROPOSALS NEED TWEAKING. These are kind of just the base ideas for them.

You're upgrading what the Pens currently have, so there's no roster spot issues once everyone returns and you now have a more quality forward group than you started with plus there's no Jack Johnson.

EDIT: Looking back over i know the Pens would need to add more to the Toffoli deal.

Pettersson will have the blow the doors of this thing to exceed the $3M mark by a large margin. If he proves to be a solid 2nd pairing dman then I think they sign him around $3M/$3.5M.

They will give him every chance to do so, but he isn't that type of player. He is a very solid guy who is going to contribute in a lot of little ways, but he certainly won't break the bank.

Your proposal blows. Try again lol

Jokes aside I really like it a lot. Kahun would be a guy I'd part ways with. Namestnikov and Toffoli would be nice additions for the wings.

Honestly, I would like to see an extended look at Lafferty first. I know it was only one game, but he played 15:27 at 5v5, had 4 shots, 3 scoring chances, controlled possession well... He just looked good, in all areas of the game. He is a good skater too. Plus, I think it's more important now to shed salary and have some flexibility for later, rather than bring in another piece.

I believe Namestnikov's contract will be out of the books after the season no? Toffoli is worth a flyer on. He's got good speed.

That’s the beauty of both contracts. The Pens will be free to work with a lot if space next year.

Also, you’re not getting a hockey trade with JJ.

Imagine getting the money from Namestnikov, Toffoli, Galchenyuk off the books....and if we could find a taker for Gudbranson, even better.
