This team could very well compete for the duration of the 82 game season and might get that last wildcard spot but do you really think this team is a cup contender this year ?

If they’re not, why do they have to wait to try to change it?

You need size and strength with skill on D and Risto has that and he makes the big hits that makes other players play with their heads on a swivel when he is out there and that is good. You can't have basically the same type of Dmen it helps to have some meanness.
- GilPerreault11

This is a good post.
It would have been Grade A had it included the fact that he is a defensive liability in his own end.
I do love to watch him make those big hits during those 10 -15 games per year when he decides to play mean.

He wouldn't have been playing 24+ minutes a night against teams' top lines and have many teams clamoring for him which Elliotte Friedman said there were if you are really below average so I think you need to take a break on the hate.
- GilPerreault11

The facts here are
There were only 3 games for scouts to choose from that night.
Multiple teams had multiple scouts
They all weren't there to watch Risto solely, Buffalo is known to have multiple trade candidates this season, given their rather unbalanced roster and high number of UFA's.
If there is so much clamoring for him, why hasn't a trade been made?...sharks circling the water on a depreciating asset is more like it.

The narrative of 30 scouts to see Risto was way over-blown.

yeah, let’s revisit this in a few months. He’s been so dynamite offensively when he’s not throwing wicked 5 feet passes to his left to Eichel on the PP.

He’s been a ghost offensively and is still making the same boneheaded plays In his own end.

Cant wait until we get a second rounder and third line winger for him

- OneKaneOneCup

Make it a 1st in 2020 and that 3rd line RW and I'm in!!!

I don’t have an issue with the player. I have an issue with the term of the contract. If Skinner is a boat anchor the last 3 years of that deal, to me that would make the ROR deal look like child’s play.

When this team has a 22 year old Dahlin a 26 year old Eichel, Reinhart will have his raise and long term deal, Cozens will be finishing off his entry level deal, Mitts would most likely be finishing a bridge deal (hopefully both Dylan and Casey hit their potential), we will be tight to the cap and can’t afford having a $9M dollar winger with his best days long behind him.

I’m not short sighted, if Skinner scores 40 this year that’s fantastic. Won’t mean nothing to me if we don’t win a cup and strike while the iron is hot when our time to compete comes.

In 4 - 5 years then you deal him and promote the next guy.

The only thing Botts could really do is move Ristolainen for a 2C/2RW. As of now he has been reluctant to do so. With our current cap situation any improvements made to the roster would have to be dollar in and dollar out. Is Hutton/Ullmark could enough to steal a playoff series or even backstop us to the playoffs ? That’s the Achilles heal of the team right now.

So yesterday was bash Dahlin day for leading the NHL in points from the back end.

I see today is bash Skinner day for being on pace for 60 goals despite being saddled with Sobotka.

This is classic Buffalo. The 'problem' with the team is always Ryan Miller isn't elite enough. Vanek didn't quite get to 40. McGahee has a bad attitude. Eric Moulds uses his body to catch the ball. Ryan OReilly has no heart. Reinhart is a bust.

This city always blames the best player for not being quite as good as another team's best player, instead of being willing to acknowledge that the problem isn't the type of good player you have, the problem is you don't have enough of them.

this is one of the best posts, if not the best post of the year.... Well done. Apparently your supposed to be an all star defensive man at age 19 in the NHL and along with that never make a mistake. The post above explains everything that has been wrong with Buffalo sports for a very long time.

We don't know that. We don't know that he had an offer for a guy like that and turned it down. Everything is just speculation.

Here's what I know about Dahlin, he's 19 years old and still finding his way. He has a new D partner this year, a new coach, and has teams that are pressuring him more now that they have a seasons worth of tape to study at the NHL level.

Krueger said there are areas of his defensive game that need work, thus not leading the team in ice time like many around here think he should be. It's not a secret. The coach made it well known and I have 0 issues with that.

Is Dahlin a problem? No. But if they force him to play over his head at 19 years old it could cause issues later on down the road. I'm more than ok with them taking the slow approach with him currently. Let his game get even more polished and then reap the benefits later on.

Ooooooooooh...gotcha!

I HATE people that do that. I have a friend that will ask a million questions during a movie if it's something I've seen that she hasn't (I wanted to choke her during Shawshank Redemption the one night). I was like just watch the damn movie! They'll answer your question later on.

I'm enjoying the ride so far.

Krueger is proving to be the motivational genius his reputation points to. He has the team buying in hard, last seen when Teddy was here. It might come crashing down, but I have faith in Ralphie-boy to take corrective action when necessary...only 4 games in, he has earned that level of trust. An example, IMO is Jack's performance against the Habs after the gaff against CBJ. I saw a possessed player leading by example forcing his will on the outcome of the game..I attribute that to Krueger accepting blame for putting Jack out there prematurely.

As far as improving the team through a trade, I accepted back in July the likelihood that Risto isn't going to garner a 2C nor 2RW return by himself, it will require a+ for sure...or accept a lower return. I'm good with it..just don't take a bad contract back in return.

Get a new girlfriend?
Lol.

My wife is the same way, and I am only through season 3, so I have some catching up to do before I go by myself, or with my son and his girl.

Laine with 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points in 5 games. Thank god we didn’t trade for him, don’t need another one dimensional bum
- Swedish_Jesus

Laine is great at scoring, obviously a great dimension. But he has his flaws, mainly his terrible K/D ratio in Fortnite. But seriously, for me personally I didn't want him and a 5 game stretch won't change my mind. Because if you can use this as a point, I can point to last year where he didn't score for what was it like 38 games or something? And had 10 of his 30 in like a 4 game stretch? Not consistent, would have commanded a ton not only to trade for, but if you are trading for him you are also giving a top tier contract. Not saying he's not worth it, but with where we are now, don't think it would have been a good idea. This is a perfect example of huge risk, huge reward. If he doesn't pan out here after giving both the goods in trade, and the contract, it sets the franchise back 5 years, essentially wasting all of Eichel.

Just imagine how this board would have reacted if it was Dahlin who did what Subban did (stumbled on the PP and gave away a breakaway goal). Oh and that was an all-world Dman doing that in Subban. Not sure why we expect Dahlin to be perfect, although he's pretty awesome for a 19 year old.

I don't think we see any trades until Bogo and/or Montour is back, then we'll have a logjam. The trouble with trading Risto then is how do we replace is toughness. Risto has no hockey IQ but he can be tough to play against, something that is lacking on the Sabres otherwise. Miller, Scandella and McCabe can hit, and Dahlin to a lesser extent, but our lineup can't be labelled tough. Maybe we can keep Risto and there will be a market for Scandella? That would be ideal.

I don't disagree. it's for sure one of my all time favorite movies. Doesn't even matter if I come across it on TV and it only has like 20 minutes left. I just CANNOT change the channel at that point. It's an absolute must watch.

I think I saw something about it come back to theaters soon for a few days it's anniversary.
